ASHBURTON RACES

TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME The winter meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club, to be held on the Ashburton racecourse .to-morrow, will provide Canterbury racegoers with an excellent afternoon’s sport. All of the fields have filled well, in fact there were very few defections from the whole card, and the two jumping races should, be spectacular contests. The principal race, the Mayfield Hack Handicap, and the open event, the Maronan Handicap, have both attracted good class horses, and the evenness of the fields in the maiden and hack sprint races will ensure close tussles. The course is reported to be in excellent order for winter racing, and will favour all classes of gallopers. In addition to a special passenger and horse train leaving Christchurch at 7.10 a.m., arrangements have been made for the 8.35 Christchurch-Invercargill mail train to stop at the racecourse to set down passengers who may return by the north-bound mail train. A special return train for passengers and horses will leave the siding at 4.35 p.rn. So that the return train will not be unnecessarily delayed, the order of the last two events has been changed. The Winchmore Trot Handicap will now be the seventh race, and the Maronan Handicap, the eighth. This alteration will enable the sulkies to be loaded while the last race is being run, saving a considerable amount, of time. The win-and-place system will be in use, and the following horses are likely to be well supported:— Hinds Hurdles—Garonne, Cintilla, Master Dingle. Novice Stakes —Wild Coon, Valcron, Sweet Mystery.
