W AIM ATE ENTRIES ACCEPTED Two club teams from Waimate will play in the South Canterbury Rugby Union’s senior competition this season. A motion to this effect was agreed to at a meeting of the management committee of the union last night. Mr J. H. Harley presided. FATAL ACCIDENT NEAR ALBURY INQUEST HELD AT TIMARU “That William Shelker, aged 73, died on March 26, 1940, in the Public Hospital, Timaru, from concussion and shock resulting from head and body injuries received on March 25, when the motor-car which he was driving cap zed in loose shingle while rounding the bend immediately north of the Tengawai bridge on the Timaru-Fairlie highway,” was the verdict returned by the Coroner (Mr H. Morgan. S.M.) at an inquest held at Timaru yesterday. Herbert Hugh Brosnahan. farmer, said that about 10.45 a.m. on March 25, while in a car near the Tengawai bridge, he saw the car driven by Shelker ahead of him. It failed to straighten up at a bend in the rOad. The vehicle overturned, throwing both of its occupants out. The vehicle made a complete turn, landing on its wheels and facing the opposite direction to that in which it had been going. Visibility was obscured because of dust from heavy traffic going to the Fairlie show. ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED VERDICT AT INQUEST ON TIMARU BOY “That John David Corry Caswell, aged 10. on March 31, 1940, when in a boat on Saltwater Creek, was thrown out into the water 'by the accidental overturning of the boat and was drowned,’’ was the verdict returned by the Coroner (Mr H. Morgan, S.M.) at the conclusion of an inquest held at Timaru yesterday. Evidence was given by Clifford Wesley Perry, aged 11, that Caswell and he entered the boat for a sail. Caswell started to paddle with one paddle, going upstream. The nose of the boat seemed to turn across the stream and Caswell continued paddling on the one side. Then the boat overturned, throwing both occupants out. The witness swam to the bank and climbed out. He loked back and saw Caswell floating on his back and waving his hands. Witness’s brother Raymond stripped off his clothes to go to Caswell’s assistance, but Caswell disappeared. The boat was made of tin plasterer,” Said' that he was called to the creek, which flowed near his property. He dragged -for the body with a fishing-line and brought it ashore. ST. MICHAEL’S BADMINTON CLUB A successful year was reported at the annual meeting of - St. Michael s Badminton Club, over which Mr F. W. ELECTION RESULTS WAIMATB All members of the retiring committee were re-elected at the annual meeting of householders in the Waimate school last evening. There was an attendance of about 200. Members of the committee are:— Messrs W. G. Paul (chairman), C. M. Asher, L. J. Collins. J. K. Denholm, C. W. Englefield, A. A. McKenzie, G. R. Watters, T. A. "Wilson, and Dr. R. G. Shackleton. CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING SEASON OPENED BY TEMUKA HARRIER CLUB The harrier season was opened in Temuka on Saturday, when 20 members of the Temuka Harrier Club completed a course of five miles through property of Messrs C. Lyons and M. Clifford to the Kakahu road and home across the Manse bridge. The president (Mr W. J. Quirke) declared the season open and expressed the hope that the club would have a successful year. WEEKLY RUNS AT TIMARU The weekly run of the Timaru Anglican Harrier Club was held from St. John’s Church, Highfleld, on Saturday, 19 runners taking part. Results: —Slow pack: E. Edlin 1, A. Foden 2. Medium pack: G. Tubb 1, B. Best 2. Fast pack: K. Ramsay 1, J. Knowles 2. The trail was laid by J. McKim and J. Lee, the course being about five miles in the Glen-iti district. The Presbyterian Club held its opening from St. Paul’s Hall, Highfleld, as the guests of the St. Paul’s Tennis Club. A five-mile trail was laid by J Andrews and G. Wakefield. Hardie 3 ANNIVERSARY OF ZEEBRUGGE To-day is the twenty-second anniversary of the great feat by the British Navy at Zeebrugge. W AIM ATE HIGH SCHOOL NO ENROLMENTS FOR WOOL-CLASSING ' 1 : No enrolments were obtained this year for the wool-classing classes con- 1 ducted by the Waimate High School ' Board, according to a report presented i to a meeting of the board by the secretary, Mr S. d’A. L. Grut. y It was decided that it was impossible tb carry on the classes. Those present at the meeting were Messrs S. I. Fitch (chairman), T. E. Parry, H. M. Whatman, G. '■ J. Shackleton. G. Collett. T. "A. Wilson, and T. L. Hayman. I Congratulatory reference was made ; to the inspectors’ report, which was presented, and it was decided that the board should convey to the rector (Mr M. Leadbetter) and staff its appreciation of a remarkably good report. The rector, in his report, stated that the secondary schools’ inspectors, Messrs J. E. Learning and C. A. Noble, had visited the school on March 11 and March 12. The visit was what was called a “full inspection,” which was made once in evejy three years. In the competition conducted by the Internal Affairs Department for a regional survey, the school had figured among the prize winners, and the school library yould receive books to the value of £4. A letter was received from the Director of Education to the effect that one additional classroom was considered satisfactory for the preset* needs of the school. The secretary stated that when in Wellington he had in--terviewed the Department of Education in connexion with the new rooms, and that he had received an assurance that the work would be referred to the Public Works Department as one of urgency. ■ T . Letters from Canterbury University College and the Canterbury Education Board reappointed Messrs S. I. Fitch and W. Lindsay as their representatives respectively. GERALDINE AND TEMUKA Miss Penelope Nolan (Gisborne) is the guest of Mrs C. Kain, Gladstone Park, Orari. Mr and Mrs J. Fisher have returned to' Temuka from a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mr G. Vial has returned to Geraldine after a holiday spent in Wellington and Christchurch. Mr and Mrs M. Wylie (Seacliff), are the guests of Mr and Mrs W. Ives.Birkett street, Temuka. Mr Robert Morrison and Miss Nora Morrison have returned from a visit to Lake Wanaka. Members of the Temuka Amateur Athletic Club made a presentation of a pipe to M C. L. Fraser, who had acted as timekeper for many years, and was a former president of the Harrier Club. Both clubs paid a tribute to his. work and wished him happiness in his retirement. WAIMATE Miss Alison Ford (Wellington), who has been staying with Mr and Mrs W. F. George, Parsonage road, has left for the north. Congratulations on her appointment as president of the South Canterbury Basketball Association were conveyed to Mrs H. V. O’Connor at a committee meeting of the Waimate Sub-Associa-tion. Mr and Mrs E. C. Wright and Miss Norma Wright, accompanied by Mr A. H. Turner, Waihao Downs, have left on a motor tour of Central Otago and Southland. Golfing friends of Miss Barnett, who will leave Waimate soon to take up a position in Auckland, bade her farewell at a gathering in the golf pavilion. The presentation of a reading lamp was made by Mrs H. Kellett, who wished Miss Barnett every success in the future. Opportunity was taken to welcome the new Plunket nurse. Miss Horner. ATHLETIC TROPHIES PRESENTED END-OF-SEASON DANCE HELD AT TEMUKA Trophies won at athletic meetings during the year were presented at a dance organised by the Temuka Amateur Athletic Club. The president (Mr J. Opie) congratulated the winners and appealed for the active co-operation of athletes to maintain the goed worlv the results of which were so evident during last season. The prize-list was; Year’s aggregate of points in running events for Hughes cup: W. -Watson; runner-up, J. Burker. Aggregate in field events for the Ritchie cup; A. Opie; runner-up. M. Hayes. Women’s aggregate for Buzan cup: Miss J. Leonard; runner-up, Miss B. Washington. Trophies for highest monthly aggregate of points were won by M. Hayes. A. Johnston, J. Spillane, K. Leonard, R. Sharpe, W. Watson, A. Opie, J. Burke, J. Healey, and J. Macßae.

PEEL FOREST The April meeting of the Peel Forest Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs Morrison. The roll-call for the month was “Recipes,” and the Golden Thread, “Famous Women,” was given by Mrs Reid, who spoke on “The Queen of the Netherlands.” A feature of the afternoon was a demonstration of poultry dressing by Mrs Inglis.
