HUTT VALLEY MARKET GARDENS
« —— GOVERNMENT’S PROPOSALS CONDEMNED (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGEAM.) WELLINGTON, July 20. The Government proposal to take the Hutt Valley' market gardening lands for housing purposes was roundly condemned at a conference of New Zealand market gardeners. The opinion was expressed that it would be uneconomic to shift the gardeners, as any transportation to a more distant area would inevitably result in increased prices for the consumers. It was further claimed that any change would put gardeners back at least 10 years in their work, and that the Hutt Valley was the only location for gardens to supply the Wellington market with vegetables, whereas other land was available for houses. The conference resolved that it was entirely in sympathy with the protest recently lodged by the commercial gardeners of the Hutt Valley.
