TAR-SEALING WORK

PROVISION MADE ON ESTIMATES DECISION OF KOWAI COUNTY COUNCIL It was decided at a m-~ ing of the Kowai County Council to make provision on the estimates for tar-sealing portion of the Ashley-Amberley highway through Sefton, which will be carried out during the coming financial year. Present were Crs. H. May (chairman), J. Ashworth, J. B, Bowker. J. Wyllie, M. I. Malthus, S. D. T. Boyce, and T. Chamberlain. Correspondence was received from the Commissioner of Transport requesting the council’s views on whether it was in the interest of road safety to impose restrictions on the use of motor-cycles. It was decided that no recommendations be made.

Complaints were received through members of the frequent failure of the street lights in Amberley. The clerk said that the failures of the street lights in the other townships in the county were reported immediately to the county office, and the matter rectified promptly by the Power Board. No notification had been received from Amberley about the street lights having failed, and had this been done the matter would have been righted immediately. The foreman ' (Mr H. Binnie) reported that a total output of 1223 cubic yards of screened shingle was obtained during the last month, and used for the shingling of the Ashley-Amberley and Balcairn, via Marshmans, roads. Specifications for the formation and shingling of Dalbeg road have been prepared, and approved of by the Public Works Department, and it was hoped to put this work in hand as soon as possible. Gorse was becoming prevalent on various roadsides, and notices to property owners to have same cleared will be issued. The financial position showed that the receipts since the last meeting were £872 Os lOd, comprising mostly rates, which were coming to hand very satisfactorily. The pay sheet amounted to £449 3s 4d, leaving a debit balance of £1453 Is 2d, Which was an improvement of £3OO, compared with the same period last year.
