WAIKUKU BEACH

ALLEGED LACK OF CO-OPERATION BOARD’S REPLY TO DEPUTATION

The Rangiora-Waikuku Beach Domain Bird's reply to the points mentionedrf.rthe deputation from the Waikuku Beach Improvement Association on Friday evening was supplied in a statement yesterday. The chief reason for the deputation going to the board was to ask for better harmony between the two bodies. In the reply yesterday it was stated: “The board considers that the matters mentioned by the deputation could quite easily have been brought forward through the two members of the board who aro on your executive and who have done excellent work for both bodies: that the board has full confidence in its chairman; that the t\VO board and association, members mentioned are on our works committee, thus eliminating the need for further representation from your association; that the greatest harmony exists among members of our board and the feeling at its meeting is one of mutual understanding and co-operation. The board appreciates the good work performed by the association and - has expressed that appreciation yearly in its annual reports. It would be pleased to consider any suggestions you have to make about improvements, especially as you now have £3OO in hand for tlie same, and as all money raised by your association is for improvements at the domain.”

WARNING GIVEN BY MAGISTRATE LOADS ON LORRIES

CASE HEARD IN RANGIORA

“You can warn them that if they do not carry out requirements and get a permit we will have to start making pretty heavy fines,” said Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Rangiora Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when the Transport Department inspector (Mr D. E. Hop wood) brought charges against a Ibcal firm for operating a motor-lorry “without a ready means of entrance and exit for the driver,” and “with a load extending backwards beyond the regulation nine feet six inches.”

The firm, Keir and Thompson, Ltd., •was convicted on both charges, fined 20s and ordered to pay costs on the first, and ordered to pay costs only on the second.

The inspector’s evidence was that on February 13, near Waikuku, the load on the lorry had extended back 16 feet, and blocked the doors. The driver had had to climb through the window when he was asked to get out. In reply to a question from the Magistrate, the inspector said that in cases where such a load had to be carried the lorry operator could apply to the controlling road authority for a permit. Civil Cases Judgment was given to plaintiff by default in each of the following:— Frederick Harvey Lovell v. R. Dixon, £5 6s 3d; N. Harper v. F. le Beau, £4.
