ANTARCTIC CLAIMS OF U.S.
ATTITUDE NOT YET SETTLED WASHINGTON, January 13. While indicating interest in Mr Lincoln Ellsworth claim to 80,000 square miles of territory discovered by him in Antarctica, the Secretary of State (Mr Cordell Hull) said he was not prepared to comment yet, says the Washington correspondent of the “New York Times.”
Considerable study is required before officials will be in a position to si.y —nything about the American attitude. The claim may well, however, become a factor in rival claims by governments to territory in the Polar regions for potential aeroplane bases. It is thought that when the sovereignty of various Pacific islands is determined, the United States plan to turn to consideration of sovereignty in Antarctica, where it is felt that a long line of discoveries has laid a broad basis for asserting American claims.
