NORTH CANTERBURY COMPETITION POSITION OF JUNIOR GRADE TEAMS The position of junior grade teams in the North Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association’s competitions has been announced by the secretary (Mr I. W. Tweedie) as follows: Amberley Domain, played 10, won nine; Balcairn, played 10, won eight; Loburn, played nine, won seven; Fernside, played nine, won seven; United, played 10, won six; Celtic, played nine, won five; Cust and Ashley, played nine each, won four each; Carleton, played eight, won three; West Eyreton, played nine, won two; Southbrook, played 10, won one; Woodend, played 10, won one. YOUNG FARMERS’ MATCH AT LADBROOKS A tennis match was played at Ladbrooks between members of the Springston and Ladbrooks Young Farmers’ Clubs, Ladbrooks winning by 7 sets to 4. MAYOR ENTERTAINS COUNCILLORS FUNCTION AT AKAROA At the conclusion of business at a meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council the Mayor (Mr F. R. E. Davis) entertained the councillors to supper. In reviewing the last year the Mayor said the borough was in good condition, and the purchase of a truck had facilitated the council’s work. He tnanked the councillors ior their cooperation with him and the citizens and for the keen interest they had displayed in all local affairs. He referred to the approaching centennial celebrations and said this would be an especial effort, and he hoped all would assist in making the celebrations worthy of such an important occasion. The toasts honoured were:—“ Citizens of Akaroa,” proposed by the Mayor and replied io by Mr L. J. Vangioni; “The Works Staff,” proposed by Cr. Bruce and replied to by Mr J. Truman, borough foreman, and Mr T. E. McKenzie, assistant foreman; “The Borough Gardener,” proposed by Cr. E. Longden and replied to by Mr W. H. Davis; “The Town Clerk,” proposed by Cr. G. Whelch and replied to by Mr P. G. Riches; “The Press," proposed by Cr. A. J. Petrie and replied to by Mr W. Jacobson; “The Mayor and Councillors,” proposed by Mr Jp. G. Riches and replied to by the Mayor and councillors. PRIZE-GIVINGS SPRINGSTON SCHOOL The annual school concert was held at Springston recently. A “Cinderella’s Play" and a Christmas play were performed by the younger scholars, and two plays by the older scholars, “The Hat Shop” and “The Scarecrow.” Choruses, recitations, and dumb plays were also given by the scholars. Miss Hay and Miss T. Riordan were accompanists. Certificates of merit for Standard VI were awarded to Selwyn Millar, Trevor Garland, Edith Godfrey, and George Cottom. Calf-rearing prizes were awarded to Selwyn Millar, Winnie Lancaster, Betty Blakemore, and Barbara Wall, and a prize for lambs to Aileen Riordan. Mr P. V. Bailey (chairman of the school committee) presented Mr P. J. Riordan (secretary of the committee) with a fountain pen. in recognition of his services as secretary for a number of years. A dance was held, music being played by Mrs P. J. Riordan and Miss M. Riordan. ENTRIES FOR TROTTING EVENTS TAKAMATUA BEACH HORSE SPORTS The entries for the trotting events for the Takamatua Beach horse sports are smaller than last year, when record entries were received. The entries are as follows, last year’s entries being given in parenthesis:—Novices Handicap, 6 (11); Omako Cup, 12 (18); Takamatua Trot, 13 (20). There will be numerous new horses competing this year, and with a very suitable tide for December 27 this popular picnic gathering should prove a great success.
