AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL

IMPROVEMENT OF FRONTAGES UNKEMPT APPEARANCE OF PROPERTIES The Akaroa Borough Council decided at its meeting on Wednesday to co-operate with borough property owners in improving frontages on the streets. Cr. Pool brought the matter before the council, and said there were many unkept frontages growing grass and weeds, and suggested the council should put the areas in such a condition that they could be either sown down in grass which could be mowed or planted with flowers. The suggestion was approved by the council, and it was decided to cooperate with property owners to bring about an improvement of many untidy corners in the borough. It was pointed out by members that it was very desirable that the town should be tidied up in view of the large number of persons who would visit Akaroa during the centennial celebrations. The Mayor (Mr F. R. E. Davis) presided. It was decided to write to Cr. W. W. Williams sympathising with him in his recent illness. Cr. R. Bruce drew the attention of the council to the growing practice of motorists in parking their cars all night in the streets. He said these cars, in Akaroa’s narrow streets, were a danger to traffic. It was decided that the borough foreman be instructed to have these cars shifted off the streets, where they were a danger to traffic. The Canterbury Centennial Committee wrote asking for definite dates for the Akaroa centennial celebrations. It was decided to reply that a conference of Banks Peninsula local body representatives would consider this matter at a meeting in January, and they would advise the Canterbury committee later. Crs. Petrie, Bruce, and Shuttleworth were appointed to represent the council at the conference. Foreman’s Report The foreman reported that stone had been secured to build up the sea wall at the dump reclamation, and' that clay was being carted from the slip on L’Aube Hill for filling behind the wall. The streets were being cleaned up for the holidays. The borough gardener reported having taken up his duties and made numerous suggestions to improve borough garden plots and grassed areas. He suggested using Buffalo or Kentucky bluegrass on the areas along the sea walls, which were affected by sea water. The gardener’s suggestions were approved. The finance report stated that receipts for the month amounted to £l9O 14s 2d, and that the district fund account credit was £365 5s lOd, and the No. 2 account credit £143 6s. GRAIN’S BAY ROAD BOARD PROVISION FOR MOTORISTS’ CAMP A deputation was received at the last meeting of the Okain’s Bay Road Board consisting' of Messrs W. G. Harris. G. A. Challies, and J. Sproston, who explained that the Automobile Association, Canterbury, had arranged to assist the Domain Board in establishing an up-to-date camp at Okain’s Bay on the beach. They asked for the board’s co-operation by prohibiting the erection of camps on the road. The board assured the deputation that it would assist them in every way. Mr H. Thacker (chairman) presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr Walter Thomas, the clerk of the board. Members of the board’s staff were appointed rangers, to take action against those grazing the roads. The foreman reported that 214 yards of metal had been put on the roads, and the road near Mr P. E. Moore’s had been widened and metalled. Receipts for the month were £354 3s 9d. LARGE TRAFFIC THROUGH KAIKOURA There has been a large number of tourists and campers passing through Kaikoura this week, and there is every prospect that accommodation will be filled to the utmost this coming week-end.
