Acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting will close on Tuesday at 5 p.m. In America A filly, Betty Axworth, by Calumet Axworth has come into prominence in American trotting circles by reason of her sixth successive win. The last mail received gives further particulars of a win attained by tins filly in the Classified Pace at Urbana, Ohio. Betty Axworth won three straight heats in 2min 7sec, 2min 9£sec, and 2min ISJsec. At the Troy, Ohio, meeting on August 19, Betty Axworth was again successful and won three heats in 2min 6sec, 2min 9sec, and 2min lOsec. Calumet Axworth, the sire of Betty Axworth, is now at C. S. Donald’s stud at Belfast. A Methven Prospect Fire King engaged in- the opening race at Methven on Saturday is a five-year-old gelding by Native King from Waitaki Girl and races in the nomination of Mr F. E.- Graham. He has not done much racing, but in the Longbeach Handicap at Ashburton in June he finished third to Swift Guy and Westcliff after registering 3min 34 2-ssec. For a novice this represented j a very fair performance. 1 Transport Arrangements For the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting to be held on Saturday, the following train arrangements have been made; —A special passenger train will leave Christchurch at 8.50 am., Addington 8.57, Sockburn 9.4, Homby 9.9, Templeton 9.17, Rolleston 9.27, Dunsandel 9.45, Bakaia 10.8, and arrive Methven 11.5 am. A Coincidence The American Stake, for two-year-old pacers, and the American Stake for three-year-old pacers provided e coincidence in America recently. The events fell to full brothers in Blackstone and Chief Counsel. Their sire was the trotting horse Volomite 2min IJsec, by Peter Volo, but the dam was Margaret Spangler, a 2min 2isec sacer, by Guy Axworthy. Blackstone I two years) won his heats in 2min )sec and 2min 12isec, and Chief Counsel won three heats in 2min 63 sec, 2min >isec, and, 2min sJsec. It is interesting ;o note that the American Stake, for iwo-year-old trotters, was won by Nibble Hanover, this colt twice doing Jmin 7sec. The day before Long Key, t>y Peter Volo 2min 2sec from Isola’s Worthy 2min 33sec, by Guy Axworthy, won two of the three heats of the American Stake for three-year-old trotters in 2min ssec and 2min 6}sec. At this series of meetings Dean Hanover, now a four-year-old, trotted an exhibition mile in Imin 593 sec. He was driven by Alma Sheppard, the little girl who made history with this colt last year when she drove the mile in Imin 58Jsec. Nibble Hanover is the ninth of his dam to. better 2min 7£sec, the fastest being a Imin 59jsec pacer. N.Z. CUP RECENT SUCCESSES OF ENTRANTS (By CARBINE.) More than half a dozen of the horses handicapped for the New Zealand Cup have won races since the beginning of the season. One of them was Padishah, but his success was in the Grand National Hurdle Race, and in the same week Travenna won a flat race for jumpers and a hurdle race. Neither horse was subjected to a test which can be regarded as a New Zealand Cup trial, but as Padishah has won a Wellington Cup, the fact that he is fit will be considered sufficiently important for him to be. kept on side. Kelly won a sprint race at Avondale, where Sly Fox won a hack race and Tidewaiter won the cup. By far the most important of these successes, of course, was that of Tidewaiter. He carried only 7-3, and did not beat a high-class field, but he finished on finely, and, as he had done in other races, left the impression that he will stay. If he does well between now and Cup Day he will certainly be one of the better fancied light-weights. ' Other winners include Cape Gabo. Happy Landing, Gold Ballad, and Pink Robe. Perhaps the most likely of these is Happy Landing, who in the Carnarvon Gold Cup at Foxton defeated the Parliamentary Handicap winner Quadroon. One of the winners mentioned. Catalogue, is in Australia, and is not likely to be back for the cup. : Among the defeated, Quadroon is entitled to some respect for his Foxton second. He carried 8-10 there, and with a stone less might run on fairly well at Riccartpn, Siegmund was a very poor third in the same race, but should improve considerably. He has proved his ability over middle distances, and it is understood he is being, specially prepared for the cup. The three-year-old Gay Son ran too badly at Marton to be considered at present, j
