RACING AND TROTTING

OTAKi-MAORI I.C. ACCEPTANCE#' 1 ■ ****** ASSOCIATION > | OTAKI. Setijejmhp,- 28 i The Otaki-Maori Racing Q*Jb h as re . * eeived the following for jt < meeting on Saturday.— ror us KAPITI HURDLES, of £ I*. Qne mile } and a half. ‘

CHEVIOT TROTTING CLUB SUCCESS OF ANNUAL RACE MEETING The annual meeting of the Cheviot Trotting Club was held recently. Mr N. R. Wilkinson presided over a good attendance. The chairman, in making his report, (poke of the financial success of the last meeting, the good day’s sport that had been provided, and the public support that had been given. The attendance was a record. The chairman spoke of the death of Mr J. Y. Moir, who was an energetic official of the club for many years. A motion of sympathy was passed with his relatives. The track was fenced during the season ?nd it is the intention of the • club to’improve the surface of the' course and enlarge carry out extensive improvements to the totalisator house. The balance-sheet showed the club \ to be in a sound, financial position, about £2OO profit being shown on the last trotting meeting, which is a record for the club. The election of officers resulted;— Patron, the Kt. Hon. G. W. Forbes; ! president. Mr N. R.. Wilkinson: vice- *■ presidents. Messrs L. Ensor, R. G. G. * Westenra, and R. Powell; committee, ;; Messrs T. Wilkinson, E. Marshall, W. ’ D. Stewart, J. D. E. Winskill, A. D. Fleming, D. McLaren, J. Paton, A. D. * Cooner. B. B. Martin. C. Dierck, F. C. de Lambert. G. McAdam, A. S. Murray. C. Whitehead, and D. Scott; audi-* tors. Messrs Hicks and Ainger; treasurer. Mr R. Powell; secretary, Mr R. >w »*-G. Archer. March 18, 1939, has been fixed for the next trotting meeting.

TUJRF GOSSIP Reminders Nominations for the principal events at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s metropolitan meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-morrow, when an acceptance for the New Zealand Cup will also be due. Nominations for the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting will close at 5 p.m. on Monday, when a forfeit for the Wellesley Stakes will also be due. Nominations for the Gore Racing Club’s meeting will close at 5 p.m. on Monday. Acceptances for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-morrow. Not for Sale Mr L. W. Storry was yesterday asked to put a price on Romarin, who had an attractive success at the Geraldine meeting last week, but the reply was that she was not for sale. Apart from the prospects of winning more races, Romarin. who is by Robespierre from Limelight, has a high value for breeding purposes. The Kurow Fixture The acceptance' list for the Kurow Jockey Club, although small, is up to the standard of previous years, and there is plenty of good material to ensure some close racing. Riccarton stables will be strongly represented, the list including The Masquerader, Alby. Contract. Rebel Rank. Kilrobe, Financiere. and Flame Queen, likely Cup Candidate Advice from Hastings states that Padishah has done well since being recommissioned after a spell following his return from* the Grand National meeting, and is to be prepared for the New Zealand Cup. Padishah won the last Wellington Cup with 7-9. after failing in the Auckland Cup with 7-5, but there were many racegoers, including his owner-trainer. Mr J. A. Hennah. who considered the Chief Ruler gelding should have won the Ellerslie race. Padishah has 8-6 at Riccarton, a weight that is far from being prohibitive for such a proved stayer, and will ensure a strong horseman being in control. A. E. Ellis would no doubt have been offered the mount, Put he will be in Melbourne at the time. Riding on Saturday Riding engagements have been made as follows for the Kurow fixture on Saturday:—A. Messervy, Petersham. Silver Sail, Toro Kouro; A. Leach, Contract: G. Linton. Alby: C. Wilson, Alby (Munro Handicap), Dunstan. Sheeny: J. Jennings. Rebel Rank; A. Stokes. Kilrobe; J. Murfitt, The Masquerader; M. Caddy. Flame Queen. _ A rider has yet to be secured for Financiere. Early Foalings Some foalings at the Stonyhurst stud are as follows:—Sailor’s Love, by The Ace—Sailor’s Hope, bay filly to Cricket Bat; Brave Deed, by Antagonist—Gallantry. chestnut colt to Cricket Bat; Winsome Hind, by The Ace—Wild Hind, chestnut colt to Cricket Bat; High Rank, by Day Comet —Sailor’s Hope, bay colt to Nightmarch; Competition. by Polazel—Rivalry, chestnut colt to Winning Hit. At the Messrs Storry’s stud at Riccarton the following foalings have taken place;— Lady Zephyr, by Robespierre from Lady Minerva, a colt; Fortimio. by Rapier from Warlove, a colt; Sky Song, by Weathervane from Grey Linnet, a filly: and Glow Light, by Silverado from Limelight, a filly, all to" Myosotis. v No Chance Why Jack Fryer thinks International is a cup possibility is best knowA to himself, says a Melbourne writer. At his three starts this season the Captain Bunsby gelding has shown pace, but no stamina. On form he would not look to have a million-to-one chance on October 15. Hack Price Mawai, who has been showing improving form. *is a four-year-old by Martarma from Waiwene. _ She was a ' very cheap yearling, fetching only 17J guineas, and her owner could probably get a substantial advance on that sum now.

A Serious Check The A.J.C. Derby favourite Nuffield ; slightly injured himself and was unable to run at Rosehill. He has re- c covered.- but he will have to contest , the Derby without the benefit of a ( previous race. Another Wotan Melbourne critics are enthusiastic • about the three-year-old colt Crojick, and think he might be another Wptan. ! Crojick is by the same sire, Siegfried ■ and is out of Top Flier. He has been given- plenty of time, having only one race as a two-year-old. and that as I late as July, which he .won, and his • form this season so far has raised . high hopes. Crojick’s dam. Top Flier. . was bred in Australia, and is by Top . Gallant from Skyline, by Skyrocket . She was owned by the late Mr F. J. . Nathan, who bred Crojick. . Not Going C. G. Goulsbro had practically de- ■* cided to accept an offer .to go to. Mel- ■ bourne to -ride for the stable of J. Fryer, in which case he would have left with A. E. Ellis to-day. Goulsbro r has changed his plans and will stay in New Zealand. . Ducky and Plucky “ In discussing the luck of the Hon. P. Beatty, a writer in the London "Observer” says that he has pluck as well as luck. It required a fair share of the former to give £BOOO for Bois Roussel, after he had won at his only start in France. He says; “Most of the French racing authorities were of the opinion that too much money had been paid for Bois Roussel. There are plenty of better three-year-olds in the country \ than he is, was typical of the comments one heard during the month of May. And it follows that when the colt won the Derby it came as an immense surprise to the majority of French racing people. Mr Beatty has had the laugh over those who declared in the spring that he had bought a dear horse. Apart from all the son of Vatout won for his owner act Epsom, he is to-day worth at least five times the amount paid for him.” His owner was certainly in luck when he later gave £4OOO for Foxglove 11, a three-year-old son of Foxhunter. who subsequently won him the Ascot Gold Vase and Ebor Handicap. English writers say Foxglove II is now worth three times as much as the Hon. P. Beatty gave for him, and may make a sucs. cessful sire. Imported Galloper at Trentham Royal Star 11, the horse imported from England by Mr W. Higgins last year and due to have his first race in the Dominion' at Otaki next week, showed winning ability in England, where he won three races in 10 starts. He has done well since being put into work at Trentham (says the “Post”)', - and is a thick-set light chestnut who should be able to add to his account in the Dominion. Royal Star 11. who is now five years old to New Zealand time, is a gelding by the Flying Orb horse Vesington Star out of the Mount Royal (son of Royal Realm) mare Royal Gala. As a yearling he was sold for 270 guineas, [ and was later resold for pony racing. However, it was soon found that • he could gallop well, and he was registered under Jockey Club rules. At his first start he won a juvenile selling plate at Bath; at his second he was beaten only a head, and at his third he won another selling plate at Lingfield Park, after which he was bought >" by Mr Higgins for 420 guineas. He did not race again as a juvenile, but as a three-year-old last year he won I the Houston Handicap, seven furlongs, e at Lanark (Scotland), and was third in • the Droitwich Plate, one mile, at Birmingham. It is interesting to recall that the other horse to be known as Royal Star in the Dominion was the 1921 New Zealand Cup winner,.a Martian gelding who was owned by the late Mr CL L. Rutherford. . y
