CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES CHRISTCHURCH LADIES’ CLUB UNEXPECTED RESULTS The championship tournament, which was continued at Shirley yesterday under ideal conditions, provided greater surprises than on Tuesday, which was a day of unexpected happenings. In the third round two low-handicap players, Mrs A. C. McKillop and Miss M. Beadel, were beaten by narrow margins, and the four semi-finalists—Misses H. Loughnan, P. Norton, E. Nutt, and Mrs T. T. Armstrong —are all players with handicaps over 10. Long driving was a feature of Miss Loughnan’s game with Mrs McKillop, her drive at the long sixteenth being well over the creek In the rough on the left. Twice .during the match Mrs McKillop led 2 up. but was overhauled by her opponent. The match was square going to the eighteenth, which Miss Loughnan won.

Miss Norton, playing steadily, quickly established a lead on Miss Beadel, and was 4up going to the eleventh. Miss Beadel squared the match on the seventeenth green. At the eighteenth a poor second shot after a good drive cost her the hole and match.

Mrs Armstrong set a merry pace in her match against Miss Kathleen Rutherford, scoring 4. 4,3, 4 for the first four holes. Miss Rutherford, a promising player who has only recently won her way into the senior division, played gamely, but could not make up the leeway and the match ended at the fifteenth. Miss Nutt and Mrs Pumphrey had a battle royal. Mrs Pumphrey was 2 up at the turn. Nutt beat Mrs E. JPumphrey, 1 up. Semi-final-Miss Loughnan beat Miss Norton, 3 and 2; Miss Nutt beat Mrs Armstrong, 6 and 4. JUNIOR CHALLENGE CUP In the third round of the junior challenge cup competition played on handicap, Mrs A. A. Boon beat Mrs R. Bell, 6 and 4; Mrs Kenneth Gresson beat Mrs J. F. Cracroft Wilson, 3 and 2; Mrs S. P. Godfrey beat Miss M. Enright, 4 and 3; Mrs J. D. Carl beat Mrs R. France, 6 and 5. In the semi-finals the matches were keenly contested and the scoring was good. Mrs Boon beat Mrs Gresson on the eighteenth green, and Mrs Godfrey beat Mrs Carl on the nineteenth. The finals in both competitions will be played to-morrow. In the championship over 36 holes. Miss Loughnan and Miss Nutt will begin their match at 10 a.m., and Miss J. Wilkin will be referee. Miss Beadel will referee the final of the junior match over 18 holea between Mrs Boon and Mrs Godfrey. A four-ball bogey match will also be played and players are asked to choose their own partners and opponents. In the handicap medal match played yesterday, Mrs E. H. Clark and Mrs W. Toomey tied for first place in the seniors, and Mrs S. Bowron was the winner in the juniors. Her excellent score of 66 net will reduce her handicap by six strokes. KAIAPOI LADIES’ CLUB A field day was held at the Kaiapoi course on Tuesday. In the morning a stroke match was won by Mrs A. W. Murphy, with Miss A. Allington runner-up. In the semi-finals of the club senior championship Mrs R. J. Smith beat Mrs R. H. Tait 2 up, and Miss B. Wright beat Mrs E. E. Eves by 8 up and 7 to play. In the second round of the junior championship Mrs G. Hirst beat Mrs A. W. Leithead, Mrs A. J. Bennetts beat Miss H. Fisher, Miss A. Arlington beat Mrs W. G. Wylie, and Mrs A. W. Murphy beat Mrs E. J. Corcoran.

'RAWHITI LADIES’ CLUB A match played at Rawhiti yesterday between the Templeton and Rawhiti Ladies’ Golf Clubs was won by Rawhiti by 6 games to 3. The results were, Templeton names first: —Mrs Page won from Mrs Lovell, Mrs Anderson lost to Mrs Smith, Mrs Priestnall won from Mrs Large, Mrs Higgs halved with Mrs Hobson, Mrs Barrett won from Mrs Sparrow, Mrs Hope lost to Mrs Smedley, Mrs Nees lost to Miss Hayden, Mrs Lloyd lost to Mrs Clemens, Mrs Wilson lost to Mrs Tait, Mrs Hill lost to Mrs Miller.
