BETTER CONDITIONS PLANNED ALLOWING CONVICTS MORE FREEDOM (Received July 29, 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, July 28. Speaking on the Home Office vote the Home Secretary (Sir Samuel Hoare) announced drastic changes to ameliorate the lot of prisoners and keep them in closer touch with the outside world. From now on prisoners will be allowed to interview their friends in civilian clothes, and to mix together on Saturday afternoons to break down the evil of excessive solitude. Certain convicts will be transferred to local prisons to enable them to keep in closer touch with their families. Women prisoners will have better looking and better fitting clothes to increase their selfrespect. Both long and short term prisoners will be paid wages. All prisoners will be given further opportunities for physical training, reading, and recreation, including cinemas.
