ASSISTANCE FOR BASKETBALL
PUBLIC MEETING HELD AT WESTPORT FUNDS TO SEND TEAM TO TOURNAMENT A decision to canvass the town for funds to send a Buller basketball team to Timaru for the New Zealand tournament, was made at a public meeting convened on Tuesday evening by the Mayor (Mr J. Kilkenny). He said that the townspeople should only be too willing to subscribe to such a worthy cause, especially as the Buller Association had little or no means of raising finance. , _ , Mr J. Watson (president of the Buller Association) thanked the Mayor for calling the meeting, and said the sole aim of the association was the physical development of the players. Part of the expenses of the trip would be met by the association out of money in hand, but more than half remained to be collected. The Mayor, Messrs W. H. Hanstock, G. G. M. Mitchell, J. S. Connelly, and Misses H. Hodgson, J. Robertson, B. Strachan, and D. Garvey • were appointed to convass various parts of the town. . It was decided that members of t ;c representative team in uniform sell tickets covering donations, at the Buller-Marlborough match on Saturday i permission is granted by the Buller Rugby Union. , ~ ..' The Mayoi said that the Municipal i.and had written promising all possible assistance to the association and that Mr J. Bentley had promised to arrange an entertainment.
