LORD RUNCIMAN WELCOMED
♦ SUDETEN PARTY PROMISES ASSISTANCE GERMAN NEWSPAPERS SHOWENTHUSIASM (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.) (Received July 27, 9 p.m.) LONDON, July 27. A message from Prague says the Sudeten Party welcomes Lord Runciman as mediator, and promises him detailed information concerning its aims, with a view to arriving at satisfaction. A Berlin message says the press welcomes Lord Runciman with enthusiasm as likely to assist Herr Henlein. Field-Marshal Gdring’s newspaper, “National Zeitung,” says: “Mr Chamberlain undoubtedly wishes to stake hiE whole personal influence and the British Empire’s prestige on finding a solution of the Czech question. The British attitude in this matter will determine whether his far-reaching intentions (for a general European appeasement) will be fulfilled.” Dr. Goebbels, in “Der Angriff,” says; “Lord Runciman may count on Germany’s good wishes, but the Czechs are obdurate and untrustworthy people in negotiations, and it is possible that far stronger pressure may be needed to compel the Prague Government to make the concessions which have now become inevitable.”
