ADDINGTON MARKET

—♦ — OVERFLOW SHEEP PENNING SHARP DROP IN VALUES Vendors of fat sheep generally patronise the pre-National market liberally in anticipation of the holiday demand, and this was very much the case yesterday. In addition there were heavy passings from last week's sale, which were again brought in. and the penning as a result was 50 per cent, more than requirements. Whilst good sheep maintained values fairly well light ewes eased by a lull 3s a head. The market for this class was the worst for a long lime. Many pens sold at under 10s a head. Fat cattle retained recent prices for heifers and cow beef. but prime heavy bodies eased by a full 20s. Porkers and vealers were dearer than for seme time, the former making the be-t rates of the season, and baconers also sold well. Dairy cattle and s*ore sheep attracted little interest for the small offering forward. The day was wet, and conditions underfoot very sloppy, for the seventh Wednesday in succession. STORE SHEEP The store sheep yarding totalled about 7fo head, but" little more than half was r-hd. The best pen offered was a line of 60 two-tooth wethers, in good condition, which made 20s 4d. Oilier two-tooth wethers sold at 14s sd. with wether hoggets making to 10s fid. Most of the ewes and hoggets were poor sorts, prices for the ewes ranging from Ss fid to 7s 2d, A line of 52 sound-mouth ewes made 11s Id. The remainder of the yarding, comprising mainly wethers, was passed. FAT SHEEP The penning in the fat sheep section was the heaviest for an ordinary sale for some years, approximating round about 7500 head. The explanation of the overflow probably is that paddocks are so saturated that vendors who had hoped to carry these sheep along for another month were compelled to save feed for their breeding flocks. South and Mid-Canterbury wore heavy contributors to the penning, which contained an exceptionally big proportion of light owes. Heavy prime wethers and owes were comparatively scarce in number. but ail classes cased under the Weight of tiie excess entry, and in the later stages of the sale passings were frequent. The limited number of prime wethers were easier by up to Is a head, heavy ewes by is fid, medium wethers by 2s fid, and medium and light ewes by 3s. A bie number of the lighter ewes sold at from 8s to 10s, the lowest figure for a long time, and up to 4s to 5s below the export rates of six weeks ago. Amongst the outstanding lines was a truck lot of sfi wethers from W. Abbott (Southbridgei. Which made from 29s 4d to 32s lOd. nine at the top price. Values were as under:— Extra prime heavy wethers to 32s lOd. Prime heavy wethers. 27s fid to 30s fid. Prime medium-weight wethers, 23s to 27s Ordinary wethers, 21s to 22s fid. Light wethers to 21s. There were a number of lines of steers of exceptionally good breeding and finish. Included were some outstanding drafts of both steers and heifers from the Peninsula, the same from the Coast, local fattening districts, and Southland. It is not unusual for heavy entries to come forward at the market preceding the National, as butchers generally operate more freely on account of a possibility of a short entry at the National sale. There were too many cattle forward to-day to put this theory to the test, and from the outset there was a slow and dragging sale with heavy prime cattle down on the rates of last week by more than 20s a head. Lighter steers were hard to sell at a slackening of 15s a head, while prime heifers showed only a minor casing and secondary cows, of which the penning comprised comparatively few, were actually a little dearer. Some of the lighter lines of steers showed little difference in price from the early autumn cost as stores. There were some passings of tlie heavy proportion of steers in the penning. Best beef made up to 34s per 1001 b. and the bulk of good quality from 32s to 335. The most even draft of the sale was from McDonnell Bros. (Totara Flat), a pen of eight averaging £ls 7s 6d. A pen of eight heifers from J. E. Thacker lOkain’s Bay) averaged just on £ll. and four Southland Shorthorn heifers £ll 17s 6d. Values were as under;— Extra prime heavy steers, to £l6 7s fid. VEALERS The sale in the vealer section was one of the best for months, due to a particularly short entry for a market immediately preceding the double one. Only 160 head were yarded. The quality all round was indifferent. Only two trucks of runners were included. The sale from the outset was keen on all classes, remaining firm to the close. The average advance on the larger calves was from 5s to 10s. small calves showing a smaller appreciation on account of the strong market for them last week. Values were:— Best runners, to £8 13s fid. Heavy runners. £5 8s fid to £fi 18s fid. Medium runners. £3 8s fid to £4 16s. Prime vealers. £4 3s fid to £fi 11s. Medium vealers, £3 fis to £4 Is. Medium calves. 38s to £2 16s. Small calves, 8s to 365. STORE CATTLE There was a small entry in the store cattle section, which contained no wellbred lines, a small gathering of possible buyers round the pens, and consequently a small amount of comnetition. The odd lots of cows sold at little difference from last week, although the tendency was toward easier values. DAIRY CATTLE The penning was of average size, comnrising about 75 head. The sale was a lifeless one, little competition coming from the comparatively small attendance

nf buyers, and values cased generally. There was very little in the penning which appealed to dairymen, much of it comprising late calvers in indifferent condition. Two good heifers made £l2. and the best of the cows sold at £ll 15s. FAT PIGS A medium entry came forward In the porker section, which included some excellent quality pigs. The sale commenced at prices fully on a par with those of last week, but when the last two races were offered values advanced by fully 3s a head, and reached the highest level of the season by the end of the sale. Choppers were in medium supply and this section also sold well. Baconers were forward in average numbers, and the sale was a steady one throughout, values being fully on a par with last week’s rates. Values were: Choppers, 56s to £6 11s. Light porkers. 41s 6d to 49s 6d. Medium porkers. 50s fid to 56s fid. Heavy porkers. 58s fid to £3 7s fid. Average price per lb. lid to Bid, In odd cases to BJd. Light baconers, £3 9s fid to £3 14s fid Medium baconers, £3 17s fid to £4 6s fid Heavy baconers, £4 7s fid to £4 19s fid Extra heavy baconers, £5 2s fid to £5 9s fid. Average price per lb, 62d to 7Jd. STORE PIGS There was a fairly large entry In the store pig section, and also a good attendance of buyers Prices all round showed very little difference on the values ruling last week. Included In the entry were 20 breeding sows in pig. which made from £3 10s to £5 17s fid. Values were:— Small weaners. 8s to 10s, best 11s to 16s. .Slips. 16s to IBs. Small stores, 19s to 21s. Medium .stores. 23s to 265. Large stores. 27s to 335. BURNSIDE (PRESS ASSOCIATIOR TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN. July 27. Only 228 head of fat cattle were forward for the Burnside stock sale to-day. and the prime heavy bullocks were all contained In four trucks. The yarding generally was one of the poorest seen for some time. In consequence, the few choice cattle forward were in keen demand. Best sorts improved by 30s to 40s a head. Extra prime heavy bullocks brought to £23 7s fid. prime £l6 7s fid to £2O 7s fid. medium £l3 7s fid to £l6 2s fid. light £9 17s fid to £l3 2s fid, extra prime heavy cows and heifers to £l4 12s fid, prime £lO 7s fid to £l2 7s fid. medium £8 17s fid to £lO 12s fid, and light down to £4 17s fid. Extra prime beef was worth £2 2s fid per 1001 b, prime £2, prime cow and heifer beef £2, and poorer quality £1 12s. More than 2000 fat sheep were submitted and the demand for prime sorts was down by 2s a head on account of the heavy entry.
