India may soon have to depend for supplies of paper on her vast reserves of conifer wood in the Himalayan forests if the rapid increase in her paper requirements continues, India consumes 40.000 tons of news paper per annum, but her requirements are bound to increase rapidly. With a total world consumption of more than 8.000,000 tons of newsprint, it is probable that India will have to pay more for whatever she imports in fuJure. Paper in India is manufactured mainly from the pulp of the bhabar grass and the Indian bamboo, and the industry is regarded as being still in need of the fostering care of the Stale.
