i j NEW ZEALAND TEAM I IN WELLINGTON GAMES ON SATURDAY I By SHOOT.] The New Zealand basketball team which is to compete in the All-Austra-lia carnival in Melbourne next month will make its only appearance in match play in the Dominion on Saturday, when the team will play against the Wellington representative tournament team under the New Zealand rules. The match will bo played in the Wellington Town Hall, and an exhibition game played under Australian rules will follow. Following are the teams - New Zealand Forwards—L. Mehaffey (Southland) M Tangyc (Auckland), J. Willson and E. Howard (Wellington). Centres—E. Neame (Southland). F. Southon (Canterbury). M. Howe (Wellington), and M. Martin (Auckland). Defence—M. Matangi (Auckland) captain, J. Mitchell (Wellington), vicecaptain. R. Butcher (Hawke’s Bay), and E. Sinclair (.Otago). Wellington Forwards—J. Grainger, T. Wcyburnc M. Jenkins, and E. Overton. Centres—M. Blake, V. Stone, E. Ruddcll. and J. Crewes. Defence—M. Wilson. J. Williams, M Walker, and F. Connor. Match play in the Australian carnival will be confined to the Australian rules, the New Zealanders playing exhibition matches only under their own rules. During the last few days, all members of the team have been thoroughly coached in the Australian game by Mrs H. D. Muir, who will continue the training leaves for Australia in the Wanganella on August 4. Officials travelling with the team are Mrs H. D. S Mclnnes (first president of the New Zealand Basketball Association), and Miss M. E. Armstrong (president of the New Zealand Basketball Referees Association). Miss Armstrong left for Sydney by the Awatea last week, and will spend a fortnight in Sydney before going on to Melbourne with the team. During this time she will see as much as possible of the Australian game, and hopes to have the opportunity of refereeing some games in order to become familiar with the code before attending the referees’ conference during the carnival. Miss Armstrong will also act as publicity officer Two other matches of importance will be played at Wellington on Saturday. Canterbury’s third grade team will be matched against Wellington ' B team, and Taranaki will meet Wellington 111. . , .. The annual meeting of the council of the New Zealand Basketball Association will be held on Tuesday, August 30. at 2 n.m. The Canterbury delegates are Mrs K. I. Macintosh and Mrs J D Cairney. president and secretary resoectivelv. of the Canterbury Basketball Association. Miss M. Matangi. who is containing the Now Zealand team will be Auckland’s delegate. The New Zealand Basketball Referees’ Association delegates are Miss M. E. Armstrong and Mr W. E. Howe, both of Wellington. One of the remits to the council is that the council consider the question of the appointment of playerreferees of New Zealand status for New Zealand tournaments. Abraham (New Plymouth), G. Basstian (Southland), A. Mcßean 'Pleasant Point), I. Young (Timaru), O. Wharton (Wellington), L. Sturroch (Wellington), S. Foster (Dunedin), and Messrs Blomeley (Auckland), A. Cook (Southland), Bryant (Southland), D. T. McCormick (Canterbury), and R. Armstrong (Winchester). Unfortunately, the appointed Christchurch referee, Mr D. T. McCormick, will not be available owing to illhealth. Mr McCormick is also unable to carry on his duties in training Canterbury’s senior representative team, and Mrs J. D. Cairney will take his place as coach. Mrs Cairney has again been appointed manager of the team. Hard Courts Fund There has been some misunderstanding concerning the allocation of the proceeds tiom the sale of the team name-sheets each Saturday. The money is not used for paying for the rental of the Christchurch East courts, but is set aside to augment a special fund which will, in time, pay for hard courts which will be the property of the Canterbury Basketball Association. Ashburton v. Canterbury The Canterbury team of senior players to meet Ashburton will be captained by R. Cursons, of Awatea. Miss Cursons was very unfortunate not to get into the first team, and is admirably suited to be captain of the second team. The emergency player will be N. Smith, of Technical.
