TUNNEL ROAD SCHEME

CONFERENCE WITH MINISTER HOSPITAL BOARD NOT TO TAKE PART The North Canterbury Hospital Board will not be represented at the conference called for June 27 to discuss the Tunnel Road project with the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple). A letter inviting the board to appoint two representatives was received at yesterday’s meeting and the chairman (Mr L. B. Evans) suggested that Messrs W. J. Walter and W. P. Spencer be appointed. , It would be useless his attending as he was opposed to the project, Mr Walter said. They only wanted those at the meeting who were in favour of the scheme. If he went he would have to support it and he was not in favour of it. * The chairman said he was opposed to the project, but had had to represent the board and support it at a previous conference. Mr Spencer said he would be there representing another body. Mr Walter moved that the letter be received. Mr H. E. Denton moved an amendment that a deputation be appointed to attend the conference and support the project. As an elected body they had a duty to vote on a matter of concern to the whole community. They would have to support the project as the invitation was for a deputation favouring the tunnel road scheme. The amendment was put to the vote, eight voting for it and eight against it. The chairman gave his casting vote against the amendment and the letter was received.
