WAIMAIRI COUNTY TO BE REPRESENTED

DELEGATES GIVEN “FREE HAND” The Waimairi County Council agreed last night to be represented- at a conference of local bodies to meet the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) next Monday, and discuss the tunnel road project with him. In its last term of office the council opposed the scheme, and last night it agreed to give its delegates to the coming conference a “free hand.” Doubt whether the council’s delegates would be' allowed to speak against the project was expressed by Cr. Scott. “They only want representatives who are in favour of the scheme,” said Cr Scott alter an invitation to the conference from the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane) had been read. Cr. C;«E. Cross: Receive the letter. Cr. Chapman: We should be represented. Cr. W. J. Walter: You won’t be allowed to speak. Cr. Scott; I am quite satisfied that we will not be allowed to speak against the scheme, but we can at least get up and they can put us down. Cr. H. Kitson remarked that 'he would not support any motion that the delegates be instructed to oppose the scheme, and it was then agreed that Crs. Scott and Chapman be given a “free hand.*’
