EFFECT OF RATE INCREASES
TRAMWAY AND HOSPITAL BOARDS COMMENT BY WAIMAIRI COUNTY CHAIRMAN “If all these rates are going up we will have to raise our own rates,” commented the chairman of the W - mairi County Council (Cr. F. S. Scott), .when the council last night received advice of increases in the Christchurch Tramway Board and the North Canterbury Hospital Board rates. The Tramway Board rate has been increased by nearly 50 per cent., while the Hospital Board levy on the county has been increased from £5358 last year to £6174 this year. “We should apply to the powers that be for the appointment of a commission to go into the working of the Tramway Board,” commented Cr. W. G. Chapman. “It is time that something of this sort was done.” Cr. Scott: I do not think you would get anywhere. However, if all these rates are going up we, will have to raise our own rates. There seems nothing else for it. Cr. Chapman: Well, the ratepayers cannot pay their rates even now. The discussion then ended.
