MANY URGENT APPEALS

RED CROSS DEPOT SUB-CENTRES PROMISE HELP The Red Cross Society in Christchurch is not finding that returned soldiers and their dependants are in better circumstances than they were last year. During April and May, as many urgent appeals were received at the depot as were received -in the same two months in 1937, These facts were reported at a meeting of the women’s executive of the society, held in the society's rooms, Hereford court, yesterday morning. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENT Soap-Making Recipe In response to “Inquirer’s” letter concerning the failure of her soapmaking recipe which hitherto had proved successful, the Lady Editor of “The Press” has received several replies from readers.- “Dunsandel” reader advises the use of fnore water. If making soap in a copper, the tap may •be turned on and when sufficient water has been added the mixture will blend. She has often had to add an extra bucketful of water. If the soap mixture has been left overnight, it should be reheated before water is added. “E.E.” (Horrelville) sends the following recipe which she has'used with success for many years;— 2 Gallons -water in kerosene tin. li Tins caustic soda. 71b Fat quite free from salt, preferably mutton fat. 11b Resin, lib Borax. Method: Crush up resin and put in water with fat and bring to the boil, stirring frequently. Boil half an hour at least, then stir occasionally while cooling. When fairly cool set aside for two days, then turn out and cut into bars. LIKE A LIFE PJNTENCE. “1 felt sentenced to stoutness for life,” wilte Mrs R. G. P„ of Spreydon, “and had resigned myself to permanent fatigue and ill-health. But last month 1 began Naturettes. Already I’ve lost Hlb, and gained excellent health. Naturettes are wonderful.” 17 days’ guaranteed treatment 7s 6d. E. Cameron Smith, Ltd., Chemists, Cathedral square, —2
