WET WEATHER RUGBY

MATCHES AT GREVHOUTH Bad weather was experienced for the West Coast Rugby Union’s competition matches at Greymouth on Saturday. The principal attraction at Rugby Park was the match between United Seniors and Excelsiors (Hokitika), the former winning 13-5 after a dour forward game. Excelsiors, who had considerably the better of the opening half, led -by 5 points to 3 at the interval. In spite of the conditions, there was some excellent goalkicking, all attempts being successful. The. first points went to United, when the former University player, L. EHis, goaled from an easy position. Excelsiors immediately swooped down the field, and R. King secured and sent out to A. Johnson, who scored wide out. A. Tainui goaled, with a magnificent kick. Cox, the United half-back, nipped off for a great try from a scrum near the line in the second spell, Ellis converting. The final try was scored by W. Blair, who went over after a scramble, and Ellis again goaled, with a great kick. Mr N. Eggleton was referee. Match Abandoned Celtic seniors secured their first win of . the season, defeating-Pirates by 9 points to 0. Three Pirate players were injured, and the match was. abandoned at half-time. M. Lynch kicked two penalties, and C. R. McGinley scored a try for Celtic. Cobden Beats Stars Cobden seniors beat Stars at Victoria Park by 9 points to 5. after a keen forward tussle. A. Vaughan, G. Ford, and L. Williams scored for Cobden, and L. Wilson scored for Stars and L. Martyn converted. Celtic juniors beat Stars by 11 points to 3. United third graders beat Stars by 16 points to 3. United fourth grade beat Technical by 15 points to 6. RESULTS IN BULLER DISTRICT Results of Rugby, matches in the Buller district were as follows: Senior —Old Boys 8 beat Rovers 5, at Granity; White Star 3 beat Westport 0, at Westport. Junior Grade — 12 beat White Star 6; Old Boys 11 beat Westport 3. Third Grade—Technical School 18 beat White Star 5. RUGBY FOOTBALL AT HOKITIKA The following are the results of the Rugby Football on Cass square, Hokitika, on Saturday afternoon:— Third Grade —Excelsior 9, Kiwi 0. RUGBY LEAGUE MATCHES AT GREYMOUTH ' POSTPONED , Sodden grounds after heavy rain overnight caused all Rugby League games at Wigham Park, Greymouth, to be postponed. Country games were played in showery weather, and on wet grounds. Results were:— Senior grade: Ngahere 11, Blackball '3. Junior; Runanga 5, Rapahoe 3; Blackball 3, Brunner 0.
