CONTEST LIMITED

TO TWO PARTIES

Nominations Closed

Nominations for the Mayoralty, the Christchurch City Council, the North Canterbury "Hospital Board, and the Lyttelton Harbour Board closed with the returning officer, the Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) yesterday, there being very few additions to the list of candidates already published. Nominations also closed yesterday for seats on the Waimakariri River Trust, and an election will not be necessary in the central subdivision and in the Eyre subdivision.

The issue in % the city elections will, generally, be a straight-out choice of the policies offered by the Christchurch Citizens’ Association'and the Labour Party. Dr. John Guthrie (Citizens’ Association) and Mr R. M. Macfarlane (Labour) are the only candidates for the Mayoralty, and each organisation has nominated a full “ticket” for the 16 seats on the City Council, the nine on the Hospital Board, and the four on the Harbour Board. There is only one Independent candidate in the three elections. In the Waimakariri River Trust election the four candidates elected unopposed for the central subdivision are Citizens’ Association nominees.
