AMBULANCE WORK IN ASHBURTON

ST. JOHN ASSOCIATION'S REPORT SUCCESSFUL EFFORTS TO RAISE MONEY The year just ended had been a particularly significant one financially, said the annual report of the Ashburton sub-centre of the St. John Ambulance Association, which was presented at the annual meeting last evening. The report added that money was required to establish headquarters, and efforts had been made to build up a fund. The street collection had resulted in a return of £59 Is lid, a competition brought £7 10s 6d, an appeal to public and sports bodies £36 14s 6d, and £2 2s was given by Dr. G., I. Miller. The cash balance had increased by £lO7 13s 4d during the year. There were 39 in the first aid class, and of those 34 had passed, one had failed, and four had not sat. Seven members of the home nursing class had passed and seven had been unable to sit the examination. The committee specially thanked Dr. J. Connor for examining the home nursing class, Mrs R. Totty for organising the class. Miss E. J. Watt for lecturing. Dr. Miller for examining the first aid class, and the superintendent of the brigade (Mr A. T. Smith), for establishing good relations between the two units of the Order. The balance-sheet showed that the year began with a credit balance of £B2 16s lid. and ended with a credit of £l9O 10s 3d. The president (Mr R. Kerr) presided at the meeting. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr R. Kerr; vice-presidents, Messrs W. H. Woods, W. H. Rundle, A. T. Smith. D. A. Smith. A. C. MAYFIELD SHOW LARGE ENTRIES RECEIVED COMPARISON WITH OTHER YEARS Entries for the Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Association's annual show, which will be held on Saturday, total 1733, compared with 1710 last year, and 1814 in 1936. Particularly strong sections this year will be sheep, light horses, and the juvenile classes, the latter being a record of 329, compared with 64 last year and 179 in 1936. Spiers, who has been house surgeon at the Ashburton Public Hosr pital for more than 12 months, completed his term yesterday. He left for Timaru later arid will go to England next month to further his medical studies. Mr Barton Ginger, of Wellington, has been appointed judge of the elocution section at this year's festival of the Ashburton Competitions Society. Mr C. O'Malley. who left New Zealand last year to visit England and Europe, has resigned his position as art master at the Ashburton High School, as he has secured a position in commercial art at London. Mr J, H. Ritchie, who has been relieving art master at the school, was appointed to the position at the meeting of the Board of Governors yesterday.
