A RECORD ROLL

ASHBURTON HIGH SCHOOL ACCOMMODATION OVER TAXED The Ashburton High School opened this year with a record enrolment of 99 new pupils, stated the report presented by the headmaster (Mr E. A. Cockroft) at the monthly meeting of the Board of Governors yesterday morning. The present roll was also a record, there being 126 girls and 156 boys at the school, making a total oi 282. This entitled the school to an additional teacher. The chairman (Dr. G. I. Miller) presided. It was reported that with the increased roll the accommodation at tne school was seriously taxed. At present it was necessary to use the gymnasium and both the masters' and mistress's rooms for classes. Application had been made for additional accommodation. , . .. On the motion of the chairman, tne headmaster and his staff were congratulated on the excellent examination results obtained in 1937. It was reported that the Education Department had granted the boards application for repairs to be made to the roof of the school library, the cost of £92 10s to be carried by the board's endowment fund. For the visiting committee, Mr G. C. Nicoll said that the accommodation m the boys' locker room was hopelessly inadequate, and that something should be done immediately to expedite its extension. It was decided to write a further letter to the Education Department on the matter.

The secretary (Mr G. V. Furby) reported that there was a credit balance of £BB 3s. The farm report stated that harvesting was almost completed. A draft of fat lambs had been taken. A tractor has been hired to help with the preliminary ploughing and grubbing. Continued cropping was making it very difficult to keep down the growth of weeds, and it was suggested by the agricultural instructor (Mr R. M. McGregor) that 50 additional ewes be purchased, allowing for the decrease in the area under crops, said the report. On February 28 there were 188 sheep, 11 pigs, and 5 horses on the farm. The farm committee was empowered to purchase 50 ewes. MATCH FOR BRISTOL CUP SOUTH CANTERBURY (iAME UNCERTAIN Whether the winner of the Ashburton senior cricket championship will be permitted to play the winner of the South Canterbury championship this year is still uncertain, according to a discussion at a management committee meeting of the Ashburton Cricket Association last evening. The match has been an annual one for many years, but the South Canterbury Cricket Association announced early thi* season that it intended to apply to the trustees of the cup for an amendment to the rules, so that Ashburton would be excluded and the competition would be confined to clubs within the South Canterbury Association. Ashburton protested against the proposal some time ago, but has not yet been advised of the decision. It was decided to write to the South Canterbury Association saying it was expected that the Ashburton competition would be completed on Saturday, and asking when it would be convenient to arrange the Bristol Cup match. The Methven Cricket Club wrote that it had to default to Tinwald last Saturday because most of the club's junior players took part in the swimming carnival. It was decided to thank the Canterbury Cricket Association for sending two representative teams to Ashburton recently, and to suggest that two more teams be sent on March 19. Mr F. Pritchard (president) presided. The rules of the association, which were revised by a special committee recently, were adopted after some minor alterations at a general meeting of the association.
