LAWN TENNIS

CANTERBURY’S EASY

WIN

MATCH AT WILDING PARK

SOUTH CANTERBURY LOSES

EVERY RUBBER

South Canterbury was no match for Canterbury In the annual fixture held at Wilding Park on Saturday, failing to win any of the 24 rubbers, Canterbury did not underrate the opposition, and entered its strongest team, but South Canterbury’s strength was weakened by the absence of three of its more prominent representatives. That, however, was not likely to have improved South Canterbury’s chance of winning the fixture, but with its team at full strength South Canterbury might well have won one or two of the rubbers.

The weather was almost perfect and the courts were fast and true, in spite of rain overnight. The public obviously looked on the fixture as the least interesting of the season, and the attendance was small. . „ , Canterbury’s superiority was most clearly shown in the women’s matches, all of which were won in straight sets. South Canterbury won only 14 games in the six matches of the singles and seven in the three doubles matches. Much more determined opposition was given by South Canterbury in the men’s matches. South Canterbury’s first man, W. E. Renton, demonstrated his ability in volleying to good purpose against C. Angas. and for fast and accurate play this was probably the best of the singles matches. Angas, as usual, was in fine form, and Rpnton could find no consistent weakness iii his opponent’s game, Angas winning 6-2, 6-3. G. C. Reid could make little Impression on H. A, Barnett, but in the remaining matches of the men’s singles the visitors were perhaps a little unlucky. J. Milliken, T. C. Morrison, and R. T. Shiels took H. Dymond, I. J. Corich, and C, F. Penfold to three sets, and A. R. Cant and G. Innes-Jones went to 10-8 in the second set before Cant won. At critical moments the Canterbury men were steadier than their opponents.
