INDIA’S NAVAL DEFENCES
BRITAIN TO FORGO PAYMENTS (DRITISB OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) RUGBY, February 26. Much interest has been aroused in the announcement that the British Government will forgo in future the annual payments of a direct contribution of £IOO,OOO towards the naval defence of India, and miscellaneous charges of £15,000 to £20,000 on behalf, of vessels of the Royal Navy.
This action is taken on condition that India maintains a sea-going fleet of noj less than six modern escort vessels, free to co-operate with the Royal Navy in the defence of India, and in addition fulfils its responsibility for local naval defence of Indian ports. In consideration of the services performed by the Royal Navy, India has paid contributions of various amounts since 1869.
