The insurgent cruisers Canarias, Baleares, and Almirante Cervcra, two auxiliary vessels, and three aeroplanes made a combined attack ai d extensively damaged Valencia and Sagunto. A Government gunboat replied to the bombardment from Valencia. Aeroplanes from where 50 to 60 bombs and shells were dropped, shattered the forward funnel of the Almirante Cervcra. The British steamer Shetland, av/aiting orders at Valencia, was struck by a shell in the forecastle and holed above the waterline. The c’ -v/’s quarters were demolished. No one was injured. Questions addressed to the Foreign Secretary were answered in the House of Commons by the Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain), who stated that a communication had now been received from the Salamanca authorities in reply to the British note of protest against attacks on British shipping. The terms of the communication could not be regarded as satisfactory by the British Government. The reply to be returned to that communication was at present under consideration. Mr Chamberlain also stated that it was still not possible to estimate the exact effects of the Austrian and German agreement. The Government was following developments with close attention.
