AUSTRIAN NAZIS DEMONSTRATE
♦ ARRESTS IN VIENNA PEACEFUL METHODS URGED BY MINISTER (Received February 23, 12.5 a.m.) VIENNA, February 22. Nazis demonstrated for four hours in front of the Opera House, shouting, singing, and assaulting nonNazis. The police, abandoning their recent restraint, arrested a number of persons. ' The police closed the university after Dr. Schuschnigg’s student supporters had occupied the university hall and clashes with the Nazis had occurred on the steps of the building. The Minister for the Interior (Dr. von Inquart), in a broadcast appeal for the maintenance of order and discipline, issued an injunction that Austrian Nazis must gain their ends by peaceful penetration. He also forbade the use of the German flag for the purposes of demonstration, also the use of “Heil Hitler” and the singing of Nazi songs.
