ADDINGTON MARKET

HEAVY ENTRY OF EWES BEEF AND MUTTON EASIER Yesterday’s entry of sheep at the weekly Addington market was the biggest of the season, about 35,000 in all sections being penned. These came from widely-scat-tered sources. For good young ewes or those with mouths, which were comparatively few in such a big penning, there was a steady sale, but practically all classes were about a shilling a head cheaper, and there were a number of passings. Store iambs numbered about 11,000 head, and were about a shilling easier than a week ago. Fat lambs sold at better than the Improved schedule of 8d per lb for first grade. Fat sheep comprised an over-supply, and there was an easing ranging from Is to Is 6d for all sorts except export ewes. Fat cattle were again forward in excess numbers, and except for pens of the primest sorts values were down by 10s to 15s. Porkers and vealers sold at improved rates. It being the last sale before the ewe fairs commence, farmers were present in larger numbers than usual. STORE LAMBS The entry of store sheefp approximated nearly 26,000 head, of which about 14,000 were ewes. These came from distant points—travelled ewes from Marlborough, which did not pen up in too bright condition, some trucked lines! from the south, and other consignments from the Chathams The lambs were forward from, different parts of North Canterbury and Southern Marlborough. The lamb market was weaker, though to less than a shilling a head for good rape sorts. For the best pens of these from 18s to 20s was obtained, with others less forward from 15s to 17s. The market contained a fair proportion of medium lambs in the matter of size and condition. but which would have to be carried over, these ranging from 12s to 14s, an easing of a good shilling. Small cull lambs, backward in condition, met with a much slacker sale by about Is 6d a head on top of last week’s easing, lambs from 7s lOd to 10s being 3s easier than some weeks ago. A pen of 171 Romney cross ewe lambs from the south sold at 24s 3d.

FAT SHEEP

The entry in the fat sheep section showed an increase of from 5500 to about 6300. It Included a heavy proportion of light wethers, which were in many cases little better than good stores. Light ewes were also in big supply, and consequently the prime lines occupied a small proportion of the total penning. The market opened easier than last weeks rates, particularly for light wethers, which were down by up to Is 6d. Heavy ewes and wethers were easier from Is to Is 6d, but freezing J ewes nearly maintained recent rates. The export firms operated freely, values coming comfortably within the schedule, which for mutton remains the same as during the previous week. Amongst some prime pens was one from M S Turton (Ashburton), which sold at 35s Id for seven. The top priced pen of ewes sold at 28s lOd. Values were as under:— „ ~ Extra prime heavy wethers to 35s Id. Prime heavy wethers, 29s to 31s. Prime medium-weight wethers. 26s to 28s 6d. Ordinary wethers. 22s 6d to 25s 6d. Light, to 225. . There was a short entry in the veal section. Quality was very mixed, and compared with recent sales „ th ® re comparatively few lines of good calves penned. The sale opened very firmly at an advance of from 4s to 5s a head for practically all classes, and the improved prices were maintained until the end. Values were:— „ Extra heavy runners to £7 6s. Heavy runners, £3 18s 6d to £5 4s 6cL Medium runners. £2 10s to £3 6s. Prime vcalers, £3 2s to £5 Is. Medium calves. 24s to 525. Small calves, 10s to 255.

STORE CATTLE There was quite a fair sale in the store cattle pens for the better pens forward. A pen of two to two and a half year steers sold at £7 18s 6d. three-year steers to £7 15s. and cows for fattening to £5 18s Cd. Several pens of mixed sex calves met with good competition, making from 50s to £3 Bs. There was a good yarding of potting bulls, and these sold keenly at prices ranging from £6 12s 6d to £ll 18s 6d. DAIRY CATTLE The yarding of dairies comprised about 70 head, mostly of indifferent quality. For the few good cows and heifers at profit there was a free demand at near late rates, but all other sorts were down by 23s to 30s a head. The sale for these was very dragging, and there were passings. Top heifer prices were £l2 10s and £l2, and top-priced cow was £ll 10s. FAT PIGS The entry in the porker section was a good deal smaller than lias been the case for some time, and butchers would have been short of requirements had it not bften for some late arrivals. As a result ail classes met with an advance of 2s to 3s a head on the rates of last week. Baconers were penned in fairly large numbers, and competition was again keen, t' trices, if anything, being a shade better ban those of last week. Valyes were:— Light porkers, 37s 6d to 41s lid. Medium porkers, 42s fid to 48s fid. Heavy porkers, 49s 8d to 55s sd. Average price per lb, 6Jd to 6Jd. Light baconers. 57s fid to £3 7s fid. Medium baconers, £3 0s fid to £3 13s fid. Extra heavy baconers. £3 16s fid to £4 3s fid. Average price per lb, fid to 6id. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was of similar size to that of last week Competition was very dull, and weaners and slips showed a further easing. On the other, hand large stores met with very free competition, and realised prices close to porker rates. Values were:— Small weaners, 6s to 10s; best, 12s to 15s. Slips, 17s to 20s. Small stores. 21s to 28s. Large stores, 30s to 355. Extra large, 40s to 44s fid.
