PROGRESS OF SUMNER BOROUGH WORKS

Reporting to the Sumner Borough Council last evening on the progress of the loan works at present in hand in the borough, the Mayor (Mr T. Newburgh) said that very good progress was being made with the sewer, gas, and water mains. In spite of early difficulties in Campbell street the sewer mains were going ahead satisfactorily and the same applied to the gas mains, which did not offer such difficulties as had arisen over the sewer pipes. The water mains were now under way. Cr. E. L. Chitty asked whether something could be done to expedite the laying of the sewer mains. At the present rate it would be a long time before they were finished. The Mayor said that he would look into the matter. He added that he had had an entirely satisfactory interview with the Minister for Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong), who had assured him that the council need not be concerned about the raising of the balance of the loan, as the Minister would arrange to get it. Incidentally, the Minister had instructed the Town Clerk to arrange to put on 12 more men on to the Redcliffs reserve and the Minister would foot the bill.
