NOTES ON THE RACING

TTHI; press special service.] THAMES, January 22.

-TGood dividends were a feature of the opening of the Thames Jockey Club meeting to-day. High Delight, Rona Bay, and Mungacre all paying double figures. Win in First Race

Having his first race, the aged gelding High Delight brought off a surprise in the Trial Handicap, paying more than a score for a win and nearly double figures for a place. High Delight, ridden by T. Chaplin, who was having his first ride for some time, was not well placed in the early running, and came home splendidly. Siwell gave a lot of trouble at the post. Free Advice, Roman!, and Quilp were smart to begin, Quilp and Roman! leading along the back and across the top. where Red Ledger, Town Section, Sir Joe Joe, Windcress, and General Riske were handy. Quilp and Romani came into the straight together, ahead of Windcress, Town Section. General Riske, High Delight, and Aynho. Once in line, Quilp gained a slight advantage, but High Delight came fast on the outside to* beat him by a head. Town Section was two lengths away third, and Prival was right up fourth, ahead of Windcress, Aynho, and General Riske. The favourite. Roman!, faded at the end, but may be all the better for the run. Aynho is another who might improve. Performed Well Throughout Galloping and jumping well throughout, Mungacre won the Maramarua Hurdles in good style from the place favourite Desert Star, who was a long way back in the early running. Mungacre made the early running from Survalyon and Dialogue, and Boughal also became prominent after going about six furlong*, when Diacquedoon lost his rider when going well. Mungacre was clear going along the back, where Gascync moved up smartl.Y, and Desert Star began to improve his position. Mungacre came into the straight just clear of Desert Star, Survalyon. and Gascync, and jumped the last fence well, to win by two lengths from Desert Star, who defeated Gascyne by two and a half lengths. Survalyon, who shaped well for a beginner, was fourth, ahead of Bellbronye, Mia Acra. and Golden Spahi. The form of those behind Mungacre and Desert Star was moderBy a Head ;

The win favourite, Palustre, prevailed norrowly in the Flying Handicap from the place favourite Orate. Palustre (rails) and Orate were soon together in the lead, and they made play early from Galilee, Torch, Gay Seton. and Johnny Walls. Gay Seton was checked slightly in the middle stages, and dropped back several lengths in the rear. Palustre and Orate came into the straight just ahead of Torch, and in a good race home Palustre defeated Orate by a head. Gay Seton finished fast from the rear, to be three-parts of a length away third, and Johnny Walls was almost in line fourth, with Torch and Galilee close up. It looked as if Gay Seton would have been very difficult

to beat only for losing his position at the top. Johnny Walls made an attempt to get through on the inside in the straight, and would have been closer if he had not been checked. Challenge Beaten Off The each-way favourite Prince Rangi could finish only fourth in the Thames Hack Cup, which was won by the second favourite Melvanui, who dropped back to sixth after jumping out well and being in the lead for about a furlong. Gaiwind ran to the front along the back from Professional, Hopalong, and Mustang. Prince Rangi assumed the command, and he led into the straight from Melvanui and Barrister, who had run up quickly, ahead of Professional and Kena. Melvanui led half-way down the straight and stalled off a determined challenge from Kena, to win by a head. Barris-; ter, who was on the outside, was half a length away third, and Prince Rangi was right up fouth, followed by Gay Sister, Black Musk, and Professional. The placed horses all went good races, and Melvanui was assisted by a good beginning from No. 1.

Cup Won By Outsider The Goldfields Cup provided another surprise, when Ron a Bay won at double figures in the fast lime of 2mm 4sec. Grateful made the running from Rona Bay, Day Wind, Rulette, and Sinking Fund, Grateful and Rona Bay leading into the straight from Day Wind, Miss Lu, and Bonny Gay. Rona Bay gained a slight advantage after rounding the home turn and won by a neck from Grateful, who fought on well. Rulette was a fair fourth, followed by Confuoco, Parquet, Day Wind, Bonny Gay, and Scotland, who was last most of the way. The form of Rona Bay and Grateful was good. Miss Lu might have been a little closer only for being checked when attempting to go through on the rails. Day Wind stopped quickly in the straight. Favourite Never Prominent The three-year-old To Poto won at good odds in the Puriri Handicap, in which the favourite. Miss Brierly, was never prominent. The field gave a lot of trouble at the start, and Miss Tidal and Poiriri, who are green, were left. Te Poto and Friskland were quickly in the lead from Barricade and Raceline, and they led into the straight from True Bill. Barricade, Galloping Acre, and Mischel. Te Poto ran on strongly to win by three parts of a length from Friskland, who defeated True Bill by half a length. Raceline, who drew well out, was fourth, ahead of Mischel, Galloping Acre, Barricade, and Pocket Venus. Exciting Finish The fifth favourite on both machines in a field of six for the Borough Handicap, Crooning finished solidly to win in an exciting finish. Airam gave trouble at the start and was eventually a little slow away, Kiionsa and Paso Robles being first out. Airam joined Kiionsa after going a furlong, and they carried on the running to make play into the straight from Crooning, who had run un quickly on the outside, from Gold Vaals, Paso Robles, and High Tea. In a great race home, Crooning defeated Airam by a nose, with Paso Robles half a length away third. Gold Vaals was almost in line fourth, closely followed by Kiionsa, who faded only in the last 50 yards, and High Tea. The winner carried a 71b apprentices' allowance. Three In A Finish The Tapu Hack Handicap provided a thrilling finish, Clooneen just winning. Clooneen jumped out first from No. 1, but was soon headed by Miss Te Kouru, who quickly drew clear of Clooneen and Pirate King, who were together ahead of Forest Acre and Strathiro. Once in line, Clooneen and Pirate King challenged, and Hutana then made a briiliant dash on the outside. The placed horses flashed past the post almost in line. Clooneen winning by half a head from Hutana, who defeated Miss Te Koura by a similar margin. Pirate King, whose saddle slipped back, was a close fourth, succeeded by Forest Acre and Chief Lap.
