MATINEE MEETING AT AUCKLAND

PROMISING TWO-YEAR-OLDS COMPETE PARRISH BELLE SHO\VS~ SPEED OVER A MILE [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, January 23. Although the track at Epsom was not nearly as fast as at the summer meeting through being top-dressed, the trotter, Parrish Belle, showed fine speed in her mile exhibition with Noble Prince, a hoppled pacer, at the Trotting Owners', Trainers', and Breeders' Association's matinee meeting on Saturday, by registering 2min 10 3-ssec. The speed was also on in the Lady's Saddle Race, of six furlongs, Frank Best (Miss Jean Ray; 12yds, winning narrowly in Imm „ J ,? se • from Noble Prince (Miss P. Paton) 36yds, in lmin 34 l-ssec, with the trotter. Te Kahu (Miss Gwen Paul), limit, a neck away, in lmin 36 2-ssec. The owner drivers' handicap, ot 10 lurlongs. caused some amusement because of the size of some of the reinsmen. Bold Venture, 36yds, driven by Mr Claude Cowan Cl6st lib) won easily in 2min 49 3-ssec, from Gay Sister 60yds (Mr E. E. Cressy) (7-11), and Handicapper, 48yds (Mr A. E. Lovett) (12-10). Nervie's Last, 120 yds. driven by the Auckland Trotting Club president (Mr E. G. Bridgens) (16-5) ran a good race, but failed to reach a place. Thrilling Finish The racing was watched by about 7000 spectators and great Interest was taken in the two-year-olds, who were having a preliminary test for the Great Northern Trotting Stakes next month. The finish between an unnamed Great Parrish—Lou Pronto filly (Neville Paul), Contender (J. T. Paul), and Auto Blngen (Geo. Phipps) was thrilling, and the babies displayed rare courage in a hard finish. The Great Parrish filly, who began best, and had the run of the race, won from Shade, her stablemate, who is by Travis Axworthy—Bessie Bingen, with Auto Bingen, by Auto Machine from a Nelson Bingen marc, a head away, third. These three are all finelooking and level-headed youngsters. They had the finish to themselves. Contender, who came from well back in the final stages, was very impressive. Hillcrest, who won the two-year-old heat a year ago, and was third to Horse Power and Axmlnster at the February meeting, did best of the three-year-olds in the City Heat, winning nicely from Equipoise. Both are by Rey de Oro. Axminster was a disappointment, failing to go away smartly and showing little dash afterwards. Hillcrest is trained by D. O. Jones, who has been patient with the delicate gelding, and the pacer is definitely on the up-grade, but will require to make further headway to measure up to the standard of Sandusky, Horse Power, and Refund in next month's Derby race. j Won All The Way Forest Jewel won the Association Heat all the way, from Gipsy Light. Both are by Jewel. Pointer. Forest Jewel, who is I from June Nordica, lias shown promise in several races and may soon win at a totalisator meeting. Gipsy Light is gaining more confidence. He was first sold by Mr F. J. Smith for £5. and purchased later by Mr W. F. Saunders for £lO. Failure to go solidly Induced Mr Saunders to put her in the sale ring and her present owner, Mrs H. Medcalfe, owner of Charteris Bay, secured Gipsy Light for £l3. After going a mile in the E. S. Groat Memorial Trotting Heat. Gold Kip was so far ahead that it looked a one-horse event, but settling to his work. Pirate's Last gave a great display of trotting to get within a head of the leader at the judge. Both trotters have now won a matinee race and been placed at larger fixtures. Pirate's Last may make the most improvement.

Dr. E. H. B. Milsom, president of the New Zealand Racing Owners', Breeders', and Trainers' Association, in making one of the many presentations, praised the enterprise of the trotting owners' organisation in promoting the educational tests for young and maiden horses, and providing the public with such fine entertainment.
