DANGERS AT SUMNER

in tub F.nnoa or t*<k i-ress. Sir,-—1 go rlown to Sumner quite a lot and notice that the Scarborough end of Sumner beach .seems to be the Mecca of parents and chndren, particularly since Ihc tragedy involvjng the Joss of two children that occurred recently. I suppose it is the element of danger that is the magnet, because everywhere people will congregate where some accident has happened. Human nature is like that! Would it not. be possible to erect a notice near the life boat, .station that people could read easily? Just a hoarding with the word "Danger" in big letters on it. All the better if it were red lettering on a white ground to arrest the attention of passers-by. At. intervals round Ihe Serpentine in Hyde Park, London, there arc notice boards up in the dangerous places, and nobody goes there except at their own risk. These notices ol danger do not keep people from coming lo enjoy the beauties of Hyde Park, but they do act as a safeguard to the public. It would add to the attraction ol the beach to have a notice that was illuminated. Also, by arresting peoples alleition, it would make them thmk twice before they ventured where there was any rirk when the res I of the beach was at their disposal. During the brief season of skating at home, all lakes and ponds have danger notices erected to warn the skaters These notices arc a simple safe, and very inexpensive: way ol protecting humnrt life—and bathing seems to take a heavy toll in New Zealand.—Yours, etc., OLIVE L. CROOKE. January 10, l!Wfi.
