BRITISH AND U.S. TRADE

PROPOSAL FOR PACT IN DANGER PREMATURE DISCUSSION IN PUBLIC REFERENCE TO DOMINIONS NECESSARY (UNITED PEHSS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Received June 4, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, June 3. The trade pact between Britain and the United States, which promised to emerge as one of the most important results of the Imperial Conference, appears to-night to be in jeopardy. This is entirely due to a premature public discussion, arising out of official reluctance to reveal the nature and progress of the deliberations. Many details which have leaked out have proved accurate, leading to the belief that an Anglo-Ameri-can pact is imminent, involving modification of the Ottawa agreement, but although this might be intended ultimately there has not been any question of attempting to make an agreement before the conclusion of the conference. Even if the conference reached an agreement in principle, it would still be necessary for Britain and the Dominions to discuss the matter in their respective Parliaments. i MR SAVAGE’S PROPOSAL FOR CONFERENCE OPINION NOT FAVOURABLE LONDON, June 3. It is understood that the Prime Minister of New Zealand (Mr M. J. Savage), who favours an international conference to consider economic trade, has taken a sounding at the Imperial Conference, but his proposal was apparently greeted with little favour, most of the delegates believing the world is not yet ready for such an agreement.
