DEFENCE TAX FOR BRITAIN
* * , CHANCELLOR EVOLVING NEW SCHEME SIMPLICITY TO BE KEYNOTE (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) RUGBY, June 3. The Government’s new proposals for a tax on profits to yield £25,000,000 in a full financial year, in place of the national defence contribution scheme which has been withdrawn, will, it is understood, be preceded by the submission to the House of Commons of a financial resolution the terms of which are engaging the attention of the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Simon). “The Times” says it is taken for granted that Sir John Simon will at once begin consultations on the new form of the profits tax, with representatives of trade and industry and, in particular, with a special committee of representatives of the Association of Chambers of Commerce, the Federation of British Industries, the Corporation of Lloyd’s, the Chamber of Shipping, the Iron and Steel Federation, the Baltic Mercantile and Shipping Exchange, and other important bodies. Simplicity will be the keynote the new proposal.
