BRIGHT BATTING AGAINST NORTHANTS DONNELLY, WALLACE, AND WEIR MAKE RUNS T (UNITED TRESS ASSOCIATION—CorSBJGHT.) (Received June 3, 11 a.m.) LONDON, June 2. Playing Northamptonshire, New Zealand won the toss and batted first on a hard and fast wicket. After some bright cricket, the innings closed for 334—just one short of the highest total for the tour, 335, against Oxford. Donnelly made 89, Weir 56, and Wallace 50. At stumps, Northamptonshire had lost two wickets for 24. The New Zealanders generally had a satisfactory day, and maintained more than a run-a-minute pace all day. Kerr and Tindill, in an attractive partnership, gave the side a useful start before Kerr played one well off the wicket into the stumps. Wallace and Donnelly added 96 in 80 minutes. Wallace was not so free as usual, but played all his strokes cleanly in a sound half-century. Donnelly was confident and aggressive, driving, cutting, and pulling with fine freedom. He hit a dozen fours, and played an attractive innings, lasting just under two hours. Then he was brilliantly caught one-handed in the saps. Weir celebrated his birthday with his best innings, of the tour. lie batted with methodical deliberation, but held the innings together after lunch, seeing four men come and go. He was eighth out The last six wickets fell for 130 runs before keen bowling and fielding a feature of which was the capital wicket-keeping of James, the former New Zealander, who allowed only one bye and took two catches. Northamptonshire batted 40 minutes, shaping with great restraint before the steady bowling of Roberts and Dunning. Dunning has taken two for 14.
