SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED LAST NIGHT OP CONTESTS The Christchurch Competitions Society’s twenty-seventh annual. festival was concluded at the Civic Theatre last evening. The society's scholarship for Plano eolos. the vocai scholarship, and the Gunner Memorial for vocal solos were awarded. Other finals were also decided. The judges are as follows: —Vocal music, Mr W. Watters (Wanganui); elocution, Mr Allan McSklmmlng (Auckland): fancy dancing. Miss Gwen Gibbs (Palmerston North); Instrumental music, Mr Alfred Bunz (Christchurch): national dancing, Mrs C. V. Ritchie (Christchurch). The official accompanist is Miss Agnes Shearsby. Scholarships awarded were:— Piano Solo, Society’s Scholarship—Miss Margaret McCormack (St. Albans). Sonata. Op. 31, No. 2, Last Movement (Beethoven), 161 points. _ Vocal Scholarship, Girls, 16 and under 21—Miss Jean Sinclair (Merivale), “The Lorelei,” 160 points. Other awards were* — Vocal Solo, Gunner Jdemorial—: Miss Phyllis O’Grady (Ashburton), “When Swallows Fly,” 163 points. Humorous Character Sketch, Woman or Man—Miss .Grace Nixon (Christchurch), “Movie Mad,”. 99 points, 1; Mr J. B. McNeill (Cashmere), “Guy de Vere," 95 points, 2; Miss Bernice Tremain (Wellington), “Mrs Botherus,” 94 points, 3. The judge said that the competitors had revealed some very good work. The winner had given a good character study, and those gaining second and third places had worked hard. Irish Reel, any age—Muriel Waugh School of Dancing and Gladys Bushell School of Dancing, 89 points (equal), 1; Mavis Neate School of Dancing and Muriel Waugh School of Dancing, v.h.c, ■ The judge referred to ■ the particularly fine performance of a team of young boys. Sacred Solo, Men—Mr Noel Burtt (Spreydon), “It Is Enough," 81 points, 1; Mr C. D. Sealey (Akaroa). "Fear Not, Ye,” and Mr Sidney Bartos (Christchurch), “O, God, Have Mercy," 80 points (equal) 2. The standard in the class was not very high, the judge said, but three good performances had been given In the final test. One-Act Play—Miss Peggy Maffey’s production, "Black Night,” 120 points, 1; Mrs Enid Frye’s pupils, "Little White Thought,” 115 points, 2. The standard ,o£ the winning play was commended by the judge, who also spoke in favour of the type of phantasy staged by the winner of the second prize. In the violin solo class for children under 13 years, decided on Saturday evening. it was stated that June Smith, in second place, gained 81 points. The actual award was 87 points. Demonstration Concerts The demonstration concerts will be given this evening, to-morrow evening, and Saturday afternoon and evening.
