NOTES ON THE RACING (THE PRESS Special Service.] PALMERSTON NORTH. May 1. ' The Hurdle Race Collision, who had been unlucky on the flat the first day, won the hurdle -race fairly decisively. Ethlop made the pace and soon had most of the field In trouble, Kentucky Song, Iddo. and Collision being the only ones within striking distance with six furlongs to go. Ethlop was beginning to tire at the half-mile and Kentucky Song also dropped out, leaving Iddo- and Collision to fight it out. Iddo jumped to the front at the second last fence, but Collision had his measure on the flat and they took the last fence together. Once over Collision drew out for a clear-cut win. Ethlop battled on for third, with Kentucky Song fourth, well clear of the others. Collision’s jumping greatly Improved on Manawatu and he should Improve further. Iddo put up a a good effort. Ethlop went well till he tired, and Kentucky Song, fancied for his first start over hurdles, performed creditably. Journet was always well back. An Easy Task Captain Furst made light of his 101b penalty in the Tlratu Plate, and again won easily. He reached the front at the end of a furlong and thereafter was never In danger. Notice and Galteemore moved up handiest entering the straight and had a good tussle for second, Notice holding on the better. Galteemore was clear of Hunting Tartan, Vienna, and Hlrangl. The winner looked an Improved horse with the first day’s race and will win In better company. Notice Is Improving and so Is Galteemore. Gay Boy’s Success Getting a good clear run on the outer In the Martglll Memorial Handicap, Gay Boy staged one of his best races and had It won directly he took on the leaders entering the straight. Pakanui had led up to that stage with Master Cyklon

in behind. Master Cyklon was the first into the straight, but Gay Boy was with him almost immediately and soon had sole charge. Gay Boy was seriously challenged at the finish by Waipiro, but under pressure he hung on to win narrowly. Darecourt just headed Master Cyklon on .the post for third, with Charade close up. Gay Boy ran up to his best form. Waiplro was a rank outsider and paid double figures for second. Master Cyklon had every chance. Pakanui was a surprise favourite, but did not run on In the straight. Darecourt put up a good performance, but Red Manfred was disappointing. Favourite Falls Diamond Cutter, favourite for the Totaranui Handicap, ran in marked contrast to his first day’s form, failing conspicuously to run on In the straight. Dorado, Diamond Cutter, and Royal Record made most of the running, and after Diamond Cutter retired. Dorado drew ahead. He was strongly challenged" at the finish by Chat, but managed to hang on long enough. Royal Record and Cloudy Bay were handy, but did not improve. Blue Garter refused to go / off with the field and took no part in 'the race.. Impressive Performance The supporters of Black Thread in the Weber Handicap had some uneasy moments, as he was a fair way back in the first half and Hunter’s Morn was streaking away in front with >a clear lead. . Hunter’s Morn, however, had been used up a good way off the post, and Black Thread, coming along with a strong finishing run, gathered him in without much difficulty. Hunting Lodge was a very poor third and Huntette fourth. Taro Succeeds The form horses. Taro and Jazz Boy, materialised in the Glengarry Handicap, Taro winning decisively after being in the roar early. There was a lot of money tor First Chapter, but after leading with Hunting. Star to the straight both retired. Surprise in Final Naughty Marietta sui-prlsed in the last race but she won running away. She was last early, but after moving up to second place at the half-mile in behind the leader. War Lap, she ran right away in the straight and won very decisively. Puroto also came from the rear to take second place off Le Grand, who improved a little on first day’s form, but not sufficiently. The winner put up a much better effort over a journey than she has done over shorter distances. AUSTRALIAN RACING NEW ZEALAND SUCCESS (Received May 2,-8.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 1.
