ATHLETICS

INTER-CLUB RACING CONTINUED

TRACK PERFORMANCES SHOW

IMPROVEMENT

Better fields and slightly better performances heightened the interest a little at Saturday's inter-club athletic meeting, held on the English Park track. The awakening of interest and improvement iv\ form which officials have so long awaited appears to have begun, and juag'ing by Saturday's meeting performances should steadily improve from now until the championship period. The absence of a number of officials holding important positions in the field delayed the start of the. meeting and upset the organisation slightly. With a return of enthusiasm among officials the scratch racing should regain some of its old attraction for spectators. Chief pmong the performances on Saturday were a three-mile run by R. i ■ Rogers, who was timed 1o do 15mm Msec, and some good pole-vaulting, in which *. IS. Barraclough and W. Kane took part. Kane and Barraclough both cleared lift. J D. Nelligan. the Canterbury hurdler, was in fair form, returning 27sec for the 220 yards and 59 3-ssec for the quartermile hurdles. T. G. Broadway ran the half-mile easily in 2min 1 2-ssec. Some of these times might have been better had the competitors not ,had to contend with a high north-west wind as thev came up the long straight. The track was slightly faster than at earlier meetings. Detailed results:— SECTION I. A Grade 220 Yards—R. Thompson (Canterbury) 1, E P. Newburgh (Canterbury) 2. C. S. Barrel! (Svdenham) 3, R.
