GARDENS JUDGED AT WAIMATE

AWARDS FOR TOWN AND j COUNTRY j BOROUGH SECTION AGAIN WON j BY MRS T. BROWNLIE The awards in both town and country sections of the Waimate Horticultural Society's annual garden competitions were announced yesterday. The judging was completed on Wednesday by Messrs B. Shand and G. Knowles, of Timaru. who remarked that there had been an all-round improvement over last year, and the leading gardens had attained a very high standard. The society's challenge trophy for the best town garden was won for the second time in succession by Mrs T. Brownlie (High street). Mr R. Deacon (High street) being second, and Mrs L. Calder (Harris street) third. Mr J. Reid (Willowbridge) won the society's challenge cup tor the best country garden. He was awarded third prize last year. Miss M. Barnett (Morven) was second, and Miss M. McLean (Glenavy) third. The Waimate Borough Council's special prize for the best frontage as viewed from the street was won by Mr • R. Deacon. ! Mrs J. J. Healey (Belt street) won a special given by Mrs Brownlie and Mr W. G. Paul for the best single frontage. Mrs Brownlie also won a prize for the most points in vegetables and annuals. A special prize for most points in perennials went to Mr Reid. I Mr A. Kirby (Parsonage road) won a special prize for the best grown native tree or shrub. with a fine kowhai.
