WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED
* r POLICE SEARCHING FOR ASSAILANT (PItKSS ASSOCIATION TKI.KCiU.UI.) AUCKLAND, December 23. The Auckland police are looking for a man who allegedly committed a brutal assault upon a middle-aged widow, Mrs Elizabeth Rushford, in an empty section at the corner of Rutland street and Lome street on Tuesday night. She was badly injured about the face and head, and was taken to the Auckland Hospital. Late to-night the hospital authorities reported that nor condition was serious. Mrs Rushford alleges that a man attempted to open her handbag. She resisted, and he struck her heavily about the face and head. She fell unconscious, and when she had partly recovered she along Rutland street and turned into the lower part of Wellesley street East. When she arrived at the Embassy Theatre she collapsed on the sidewalk. A ticketseller at the theatre noticed her, and immediately telephoned the ambulance and the police. Her face and head were covered with blood, and one of her eyes was badly contused. An examination at the hospital showed that she had extensive scalp wounds, a fractured jaw, and abrasions.
