WEIR ON THE AVON
DRAINAGE BOARD APPROACHED PROPOSAL OF BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION A proposal by the Christchurch Beautifying Association for the erection of a weir in the Avon river below the Antigua street boatsheds, with the object of improving the river for boating and bathing, found little support at a meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening. After hearing the views of a deputation from the association, the board finally set up a committee to examine the proposal.
The deputation, which was headed by Mr Irving Sladen, president, and Messrs T. S. Dacre and R. B. Owen, submitted a plan of the proposed weir, which was to be erected on approximately the same site as the temporary weir erected about two years ago. Mr Owen added that he had purchased a quantity of ironbark timber for use in the structure. The board’s engineer, Mr J. Cullens, said the type of weir proposed was quite unsuitable, and in his opinion it would not last a week. He estimated that the cost of a dam to comply with the requirements of the board’s act would be about £IBO. . In the subsequent discussion it was emphasised that the board could not in any circumstances contribute towards the cost of the weir.
