DETECTIVE RAID ON AUCKLAND CLUB
GAMING CHARGES AGAINST TWENTY-NINE MEN (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, December 22. Twenty-nine men were arrested by detectives in the Albert Club late tonight. and were brought before a special sitting of the court, presided over by a istice of the peace at the Central Police Station, charged with breaches of the Gaming Act. Tv 6 police seized dice and cards allegedly used in playing hazards. . , , . Frank Russell, charged with being the keeper of a common gaminghouse. was released on bail of £ 100, and Frederick William Bachelor and Albert Thomas, both charged with assisting the management of a common gaming-house, were released on bails of £IOO and £SO respectively. Bail for the others was fixed at £3. All will appear in court in the morning. , , , An elaborate system of checks upon persons entering failed when the detectives stormed through double doors which were opened by a doorkeeper to see who was ringing the bell on the outer door.
