WHEAT GROWING IN MARLBOROUGH
EVIDENCE BEFORE COMMISSION
IT'IZ PRESS Special Service.] BLENHEIM, December 21. A good deal of business has been transacted recently by the Blenheim branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union concerning wheat growing in Marlborough. Growers' hopes were raised when advice was received that the Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin) had set up a commission of enquiry to take evidence as to the cost of wheat growing in the Dominion. Marlborough did its part in the scheme, the local branch of the Farmers' Union having compiled a statement of the cost of growing wheat on a typical Marlborough farm, and this was forwarded to Christchurch. As a result of a further development, the union was notified that the commission would sit at Blenheim and a special meeting was called to make arrangements for giving evidence by growers. This arrangement, however, broke down on account of last Monday's holiday and the commission found it would be unable to come to Blenheim and furnish a report to the Minister in the time allowed. Another special meeting was then held by the union, and arrangements were made for Mr S. W. Jordan to go to Christchurch to give evidence at a sitting of the commission there. This was done and Mr Jordan has now presented his report to a meeting of thn union. The report of the commission will be presented to the Minister very shortly, and has not been made public.
