DEATH OF SAWMILL OWNER
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST
An inquest into the death of Ernest Hayward Morris was held at Oxford yesterday afternoon by Mr H. A. Young, district coroner. The verdict was that Morris died of injuries accidentally received while working at his sawmill.
Horace Dailey, who was working with Morris, said that the safety guard had been removed from the saw. He never worked with the guard, but he knew it should be there, and so did Morris. It, was removed because xt was inconvenient. On Thursday the guard was placed in position, but as taken off after the inspector left He was of the opinion that had the guard been in place the accident would not have happened. Mr Robertson, Inspector of Machinery, said that he had inspected the machinery on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. He had required a belt to be guarded, and an extended guard to be placed at the cross-cut saw. This was attended to in his presence. He had examined the saw and when he finished his inspection everything was in order. He said that it was absolutely essential that the guard she Id always be in position when the saw was worker. W. E. Minty gave evidence of the injuries received by Morris.
