DANGEROUS DRIVING

CHRISTCHURCH MAN FINED AT BLENHEIM

(Fftass uncunoi tblcqkak.) ’ BLENHEIM, October 7. “The defendant drove his car along Grove road at a speed which various people who saw him estimated at 50 miles an hour/’ said the traffic inspector in the Magistrate’s Court this morning when outlining a case against Philip Douglas Doland, at share traveller. of Christchurch, who was charged that on September 29 he drove his car at a speed which i-iight have been dangerous to the public. The inspector added that the defendant had crossed two intersections at that speed, and that a woman pushing a perambulator at one of them had narrowly escaped being run down. . A plea of guilty was entered for the defendant by Mr Mac Nab, who said he did not think the case was as sen-, ous as the inspector had suggested. There was no doubt that the defendant had been going too fast, but he held a very good record as a driver. He covered many hundreds of miles every month and had no endorsement on his license, nor had he ever had an accident. Like many other drivers, he always travelled quickly. On this occasion he had the car under good control and he could not recollect having caused danger to any person. The magistrate commented that the aspect of the woman nearly being- run over was a serious one. He ordered the endorsement of the conviction on the defendant’s license and imposed a toe of £3.
