LEVELS COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL

DEBIT BALANCE OF £4221

“If we go along quietly, we should be able to hold our own,” said the act-ing-chairman of the Levels County Council (Mr T. W. Brosnahan) at the monthly meeting of that body yesterday, referring to the debit balance of £4221 9s reported. A resolution was carried appointing Mr P. A. Wallwork s sanitary inspector in succession to Mr J. Menzies, to whom a motion was carried expressing appreciation of his long and faithful services. A letter was received from the South Canterbury executive of the Farmers’ Union drawing attention to the spread of hemlock in the district and asking that steps be taken to combat the pest. The chairman said that in the Kerrytown district he knew of only two patches of the weed, both being inside fences on private property. It was decided to advise the engineer (Mr T. Black) to keep the matter in view. . , , A letter was received from the secretary of the Washdyke branch of the Crown Tenants’ Association (Mr J. Harris) about crossings over the dram at Seadown. The writer said that the engineer and foreman both definitely promised to do the work. The council’s denial of jurisdiction over the work was extremely puzzling, in view of the fact that the officers mentioned canvassed for, started, and controlled the work, the incomplete state of which was causing inconvenience. The engineer said that he had given no promise to carry out the work. Evidently a mistake had occurred. The chairman said that neither the engineer nor the foreman was empowered to make such a promise, and it was decided to advise the association to this effect. T'.yj council agreed that in future the rr-mcy office should not be open on Salurdays.
