COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED

MEETING OP MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The 1936 Rugby season was declared closed with Blaketown and Excelsior senior teams the joint holders of the McLean trophy, at a meeting of the management committee of the West Coast Rugby Union, on Tuesday night. Mr A. A. Adams presided. The committee decided to apply to the New Zealand union for a game with the Springboks at Greymouth, and to point out that the West Coast was not included in the itinerary of the Australian team. The Graham Wise Cup match between Kiwi (Hokitika) and Celtic, was abandoned for the season. Cobden and-Celtic junior teams were declared joint winners of the Hannan Cup and Cobden, and Blaketown third grade teams joint winners of the Delaney Cup. It was decided that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee that the annual seven-a-side tournament be conducted at the beginning of next season.

The committee decided to notify Mr A, M. Carroll that Excelsior was the winner of the Black and White caps. The West Coast Cricket Association is to be advised that Rugby Park will not be fit for playing on this season, and that work would be done to the ground and shafts sunk.

THEATRE PROPRIETOR HONOURED

PRESENTATION AT WESTPORT

GATHERING OP BUSINESS MEN

Mr Harry Morgan, who has been for many years a well known picture theatre proprietor in Westport, and who with his sister, Miss Morgan, left yesterday on an extended tour of the Dominion, before proceeding overseas, was honoured by a representative gathering of business men at Prince’s Black and White Hotel late on Tuesday afternoon. The Mayor (Mr J. Kilkenny) presided. Mr and Miss Morgan recently disposed of their theatre properties In Westpbrt to Westland Theatre Enterprises, Ltd. The Mayor said that Mr and Miss Morgan had done a tremendous amount to help the district. As an expression of the community s appreciation of Mr and Miss Morgan’s great citizenship, the Mayor asked Mr Morgan to accept a fountain pen for his sister, and a small gold compass for himself. . , , .. Mr F. S. Woods referred to Mr Morgan’s good works in the district and paid a. special tribute to the manner in which he had come to the aid of many business men. Mr G. D. Campbell, manager of the Bank of New South Wales, said that as a banker he was able to speak with knowledge of the good that Mr Morgan had done in Westport “I have considered Mr Morgan as a banker himself,” said Mr Campbell, “and I think he has done more good than we professional bankers.” Other speakers were:—Messrs* J. Radford, E. Skiiton, O. L. Nahr, W. P. Smith (chief postmaster), E. T. Broker (manager of St James’ Theatre), R. Crawford (manager of the Victoria Theatre), L. Powick, W. T. Slee, W. P. Scanlon, H, Lovell, A. Taylor (town clerk), and Dr. E. D. Dunn.

Mr Morgan thanked the various speakers for their remarks and said that he and Miss Morgan would not forget them. After leaving Westport they intended to tour the North and South Islands of New Zealand before sailing on April 3 for San Francisco. After touring America they would join the yueen Mary for England.

WESTPORT PERSONALS

Dr. Thompson, of Invercargill, will soon be starting practice in Westport. Mr W. Parker, formerly of the Supreme Court staff, Christchurch, has arived in Westport to take over the position of clerk of the court, in succession to Mr C. A. Montgomerie, who is leaving in a few days for his new appointment as clerk of the court at Thames.

Mr and Mrs W. J. Pettigrew, of Highfleld, Timaru, are the guests of Mr and Mrs M. K, Mara, Westport. Mr G. B. Nobbs, of Gisborne, who succeeds Mr A. S. Dalton as manager of the Westport branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia, arrived from the north to-day. Mr Dalton leaves next week to take over the management of the Hawera branch of the bank.

Mr P. A. Wallwork, formerly Inspector of Health in this district, left on Tuesday to take over similar duties at Timaru. where he has been transferred on promotion. Prior to Mr Wall work’s departure he was met fey members of the borough council staff and presented with a fountain pen. The presentation was made by the tewn clerk (Mr A. Taylor). Mr J. R. McGeorge has taken Mr Wallwork’s place here. Mr R. A. Gemmill, of the Railway Department at Lyttelton, is on a short visit to relatives in Westport
