TWO RESERVED DECISIONS GIVEN

DREDGE CARPENTER GRANTED COMPENSATION

Judgment for the plaintiff for £lO3 16s lOd with costs was given by his Honour Mr Justice Page in a reserved decision in a case in which Stephen McLeod Honey, of Kaihinu, a dredge carpenter, claimed from Stafford Gold Dredging Company a weekly payment of £3 Os lOd from October 12, 1934; £1 medical fee, such further compensation by way of lump sum as may be shown to be reasonable, the costs of hearing, and such further relief as might in the circumstances be just. His Honour assessed full compensation from the date of the accident, October 12, 1934, until the plaintiff ceased treatment as an outpatient of the hospital on February 7, 1936, and half compensation from then on until the present date, and for a further three months from the present date. The total am *jnt of the compensation payable amounted to £282 9s 7d, from which would be deducted the amount already paid to him, £ 178 12s 9d, leaving a balance in his favour of £lO3 16s lOd, for which judgment was entered. In a case in which Francis Herbert Fowler, of Reefton, claimed compensation lor injuries from Burke’s Creek Collieries, Ltd., the court, in a reserved decision, awarded the plaintiff, in addition to the compensation already paid, a further sum representing half compensation for a period of three months.

The amount of the average weekly earnings was not made available to the court. The court decided to take time to consider a claim for compensation by Terence V. Perry, oushman, of Inangahua Junction, against the Nelson Creek Sawmill, Ltd. Mr T. F. Brosnan appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr F. A. Kitchingham for the defendant company.

OBITUARY

SISTER MARY GREENE

The death occurred suddenly art St. Columbkille’s Convent, Hokitika, of Sister Mary Benedicta Greene. Sister Mary, who was a native of Ireland, was 72 years of age. She had .been a member of the Hokitika Convent community for about 50 years. Re- death will be regretted by the hundreds of pupils who will remember her for her kindly teaching. She is survived by two sisters, both members of the Sisters of Mercy in Westland, Sister M. Xavier (Kumara) and Sister M. Gertrude (Hokitika). The funeral took place yesterday at Hokitika and was preceded by Requiem Mass, at which clergy of the West Coast were present.

HOKITIKA CLUB

The Canadian bogey foursome, played by members of the Hokitika Golf Club on Saturday, was won by Reese and Millner, 1 down. Chesney and Stuart were 2 down. Harper and Cooke 4 down. Pain and Wilson 5 down, Routledge and Andrewes 5 down. An L.G.U. October medal match resulted as follows: —Silver medal: Miss E. Cooke 94 gross. 17 hep., 77 net; Miss Adamson 92, 12—80; Miss King 97, 14— 83; Mrs Cox 100, 18—82. Bronze medal: Miss N. REEPTON PERSONALS

The committee of the Inangahua Agricultural and Pastoral Association honoured Mr T. L. Floyd, Who for some years has been the honorary secretary to the association. Mr J. B. Discaciati, chairman, referred to the guest’s excellent work as secretary. He asked Mr Floyd to accept a suitcase. Messrs Noble, L. R. Austin, Cleaver, F. W. Archer, and C. Lawn endorsed the chairman’s remarks. Mr and Mrs O. Dykes and daughter, who have been spending a holiday in Reefton, have returned to Otago. Mr and Mrs T. L. Floyd and family left yesterday morning for Milton, where Mr Floyd has been transferred as postmaster. Mr Floyd was honoured by members of the Reefton Bowling Club on Sunday afternoon. Mr Hodgins (vice-president) handed Mr Floyd a Loewe pipe and expressed the good wishes of the club at his promotion, and regretted Ijis departure.

THISTLE TENNIS CLUB

OFFICERS ELECTED FOR YEAR

The Thistle Tennis Club held its annual meeting with Mr Haigh presiding. Reference was made to the death of a former patron and past-president, Mr Isaac Patterson, who had done much to foster the interests of the club since its inception. The meeting stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of Mr Patterson. The following officers were elected: Patron. Mr H. Campbell; president, the Rev. R. R. Heaton; club captain, Mr H. Haigh; vice-caotain, Miss A. Henry; secretary. Miss M. Wood; treasurer. Miss O. Rollerson: committee, Messrs McKinley, Loughton, and Braidwood. Mrs Campbell advised that she would give a cup for club competition in nlace of that won outright last year by Miss Lesley Burns. It was resolved that the courts be opened on October 10.

BLACKBALL SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the Blackball School Committee was held on Monday night Mr C. Hogg presided. The acting headmaster reported that the school roll was 195, the same as last quarter, and that the average attendance for the month was approximately 179. ■ Because the school was entitled to cnly five teachers the Education Board had not sent a relieving teacher, but had appointed Mr G. Maxwell as acting headmaster. ' . Increased allocation whs received from the board for the June and September quarters, equalling 44 per cent on the yearly grant The committee decided to accept the board’s recommendation of Mr Reginald Allen as headmaster. Mr Allen is expected to take up his duties on ijovember 1.
